Learn to love the woods

New member
I spent alot of time digging clad and foil in wide open park spaces that people use regularly. Hoping to find some good finds I was mostly disappointed. One I hit some old woods and forests I was amazed. I found 1700s and 1800s flat buttons, musket balls, Minnie balls, and old horse tack and horseshoes. The woods actually keep the modern stuff away as no one ventures there, and the tree roots cause alot of old items to be brought close to the surface. There is also WAY less junk signals so you can hunt in silence til you hear that great hit. And even the junk iron ones are worth digging because they are so few and far between. Some of my best finds have been made crawling almost prone through dense woodlands. It takes more work, but nothing worth having comes easy. Hope this helps! GL &HH

I also like the woods, because there is less Pulltabs & Bottlecaps. But the Shotgun shells can sometimes get a bit overwhelming, but nothing compared to PTs & BC's in the parks.

Not to mention slugs come in at a perfect crystal 38!!! A source of much disappointment. But the let downs are minimized by the lack of garbage! Haha so glad you wrote that because I thought the same thing after posting it! I guess no area is perfect.

I see a lot of people get discouraged about parks, if you think the woods is great knock on that 1860's farm house door and see what you come up with. I love private yards on dirt roads. I have met so many great people and learned so much history about an area from these folks. Always give something to them old penny neat relic. You would be surprised how one location turns into four. I rarely get turned down for privates. I would be glad to share my speech to break the ice. and its honest.

I would love to know of ways to approach folks about digging their property. I have so many historic farmhouses in my town, not to mention a nearby early 1800s schoolhouse that is now converted into a farmers house. Hundreds of years of activity and I'm not sure how to come off any way other that "I'd like to loot your property and dig holes in your lawn" hahaha. At least I feel like that's how they would take it!
