Leaves Static

cachenut

New member
I had some trouble with my explorer Thursday. There were leaves around and I was pushing them out of the way as I swung. My depth was poor v poor and it did not id a wheathead at 2 inches. Said it was 10 and gave various numbers. Other coins were similar. But I did find more targets where there were no leaves and ids and depth were right.

Also it was very wet and that might have caused some of this.

? Do leaves on top cause static and loss of depth as you swing thru them???

Thanks Joe.

Could've been possible that a lot of rejected targets were there causing the detector to become erratic. Were you getting lots of nulling?

By static, do you mean falsing? As was said, the first thing to check would be the coil cover. However, since you mentioned you were pushing leaves out of the way with your coil, maybe the leaves are moving your coil wire around (if there's excess between the coil and the rod). Next time, try a couple of velcro straps to hold it stationary and see if it helps

Leaves were a little wet but not soaked. I was getting drops of water on my coil ever once in a while. What do wet leaves do to the detector. Grass was a little wet too.

Coil wire is not loose. I will try cleaning the coil and cover. No it was not falseing just targets were saying very deep and only a few even though they were shallow.

It just seemed odd behavior for my Explorer and then it worked better where there were not leaves to push around so I asked. It was 53 that day and now it is 30 so I may not get out anymore this year. If it gets up to 45 one afternoon I will go back over.

Like Joe said, moving the leaves with your coil could cause falsing, the Sun Ray 10.5" Coil Support Bracket Kit could solve the problem, it's $9.95 + s&h.
