Below is a pic of a hand blown vial found in this brass container. Large cent for scale. The vial still has residue of white powder. I'd guess from the site where it was dug, this dates to the mid 1800's, possibly a smelling salt or medical vial, perhaps British military???

Laudanum was widely used in the 1800's as a pain reliever but I think it is/was made from opium so I'm sure it was used for getting a high also <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">.

Anything stamped on the bottom of the case...Germany! for excample?

It was opium in a liquid medium and yellowish in color, derived from poppy seeds. Chinese smoked it and it was not as refined then, off white color, ranging to yellow brown.
Some forms of "snuff" were laced with it.

YES, ITS LADANUM THINK ITS MADE FROM OPIATES OR LIKE HEROIN? BUT THAT IS WHAT SHE WAS TAKING.

The spelling may be wrong but it is-lodinum an opium derivative.

And still is. HA. Glad somebody spelled that right. I couldn't remember.

Like Coca-Cola used to be laced with cocaine. Hence the name Coca Cola as cocaine comes from the coca plant. Course it was eventually outlawed but the name stuck.

Opiates are what is in the medication I take and belive me never start that stuff, your body will become addicted to it. I do not care how strong your mind is your body will throw fits if it doesnt get it. Due to my back surgeries I am on a steady diet of Oxycontin 80mg and Actiq 1200 or 1600mg. This Actiq is up to 10 times stronger than morphine. No matter how you spell it, its a trade off. If I do not take it, I cant walk or sit or get out of bed, if I do take it Im dependant and take the trade. They call it HillBilly Heroin. The withdrawls are terrible. Your body will just go into a fit, hot flashes, cold chills, moood swings, then top all that with the rods, screws and pins in my back equals one mean SOB at times. I am trying evey type of treatment there is acupuncture (spelling?) massage, heat, ice, yoga, God, everything. I hope the doc doesnt take me out of the game of detecting, if he does Im screwed, fish dont bite too good in the winter here. Well, there are a few big spottails, but again there is my back problem. I just hope it all works out, if any of you are religious I would appreciate a prayer or two. Thanks Ronnie

Illustrated Glass Dictionary
"Pontil, Pontil Mark"
The pontil, or punty, is a solid metal rod that is usually tipped with a wad of hot glass, then applied to the base of a vessel to hold it during manufacture. It often leaves an irregular or ring-shaped scar on the base when removed. This is called the "pontil mark."

I'll try to get a good scan of it and post it Chris. Thanks for your interest.

Looks like the scar is polished smooth. The lip on the vial looks like it's applied also. Most of the mid 1800's bottles of that size(vials) had open pontil scars and/or a snapped off top (cracked top), were thin and are peppered with small bubbles. On the pic above you have a mold seam on the side of the neck. The glass is generally clear and relatively white. It's most certainly late 1800's or newer.Does the brass container look machine made?

...I can't see a seam on the sides of the bottle, but there appear to be two squeeze marks on either side of the neck. The top of the bottle is not symetrical and looks like overflow.
