Lithium and O-rings

I just got my ATP last week and, so far, have been amazed. My first dig was a musket ball in a pretty well scoured area. I also got my first kepi buckle in a very well pounded area. Separation is amazing and it's so simple to use. The lack of bells and whistles makes digging so much more relaxing (I've got an E Trac, too).
I was wondering two things: can I use lithium batteries, and how can I replace the O-ring that seems to bunch up when pushing the coil cord into it's housing. I tried the search but must be doing something wrong, so I emailed Garrett about the batteries. This is what I got:

"Lithium Iron

there'll be a good answer soon. it's been asked before and will be again. fyi on the grease. you can get a plummer's silcone grease at Lowes. just use a little. same for the headphone jack.

HH

All Garrett detectors readily accept lithium batteries, lithium rechargeables, alkaline batteries, nickel metal hydrate rechargeable batteries, rechargeable alkalines and Nickel-Cadmium batteries. The detectors run on less then 6 volts (1.5 x 4) as they have a voltage regulater, so that the detectors will continue running at maximum performance ant il it is down to about 4 volts.

Here are the sizes for the "O" rings rings you need. - ATP headphones and coil connector: ID 7/16", CS 1/16"

Use a silicone based grease, not vaseline .

I used the Lithium Energizers. I don't think I got the additional use from them that would offset the cost. They seemed to last longer, maybe twice as long, but they cost three times as much.

AS for the o-ring, I don't understand why Garrett didn't send you one?

Postage on an o-ring would probably cost more than the ring. If it hasn't broken, as already mentioned, a little silicon grease will fix it right up. I'm on the same set of o-rings on every device and I've been switching and swapping them out since I bought my AT the November after it's release. To be clear, that's the waterproof headphones, standard headphones, both coils, sometimes being switched out once a week for several weeks on end (my detecting goes in spurts). I clean the connectors as needed and keep fresh lube on them and have caps for them as well when not in use. My AT goes from the beach to the woods, to hot/dry west Texas and everything in-between. If you buy a spare set of rings and that silicon grease, you'll be set for a very long while!

Kraykepler, you said, "...O-ring that seems to bunch up when pushing the coil cord into it's housing". I experienced the same thing after removing the connector many times. A little wipe of silicon grease onto the O-ring solved the bunching problem...it slipped right in.

I, too, fall off fast below zero degrees F!:beers:
