Little help please

I have a F5 with the 11" DD coil and the new type of scuff cover that snap locks on. Now has anybody come up with a easy way to get it off for cleaning? I was able to get some water between the coil and the cover but I would like to check and dry it off. Right now it is setting in there upside down so the water can drain out.

If I get tools out that could be the end of my cover.

Good question Ron & I've got the perfect answer!-----Do like I did & take a hacksaw or other tool & cut those sucker lock tabs off!----Whoever dreamed that locking tab idea up :veryangry:-------to put it nicely---never had to take them off.-----What a poor design.------Yeah, they stay on great--but--you still get crap (dirt & sand) under the covers, same as before ------Come time to take them off for cleaning--their enough to make a preacher cuss.

and you put it back on, seal it with silicone-should keep it dry for good. [or 3M Weatherside adhesive]

Well I was thinking I was the only one having a problem because these covers have been out for a while now and I never seen any complaints.

I let that thing set upside down several hours last night and when I checked it, I slapped it with my hand water was still coming out and I could see some grass and stuff in the gap between the coil and cover. This is not a good thing at all.

Short of trashing the cover I am thinking of cutting a bunch of shims and tap them in next to the one way latches to hole them open while I get the cover started off. I think that will work to get the sides open but those that are in the front and back look like they could still hold the cover on the coil. Those half circle one way latches don't look like they will flex any to get them to let go.

I will let you know if I have any luck.

No need for a scuff cover. That is one tough coil and can stand tons of abuse with hardly any damage. I think the coil itself is tougher than the scuff cover! I removed that cover as soon as I got the detector. I have run that coil over and hit many rocks with it and I can't hardly see a scratch on the coil. It is not like some coils where the epoxy is exposed and can break. I have seen that happen. This coil is tough! Use them if you want, but the coil is going to last for many years without a scuff cover. Use them if you want, but just as the water stays in the cover, so does tiny dust and that tiny dust can cause falsing if not cleaned out.

I was thinking along the lines of leaving the cover off, I have never had any problems with this type of coil. Back in the day some detectors had what I call a box coil and you could knock holes in them or crack the case and water and dirt would get inside the coil.

I am not hard on coils so I think I could hunt for ever plus a couple of days and never have any problems with the coil. I would say the cable would give out long before the coil body.

I found a couple of stick over in my wife's cosmetic stuff that I don't think she will miss, they already have a wedge cut on both ends. So I will cut them in half and have 4 wedges. Somewhere along the road I may find out what those sticks were for and then a little trip to the ER to get them removed.

Yeah, I quit using coil covers quite a while ago. Grass certainly can't hurt a coil, a little scrape here on sand won't harm them and swinging over gravel is not something I do very often. And when I do I am careful. And, I have yet to injure or wear out a coil. HH jim tn

I had never heard about that cover until now. I have an F5 with that 11 DD and an old style cover that I only use in some neck of the woods that have many rocks just lying close to the surface and difficult to see. In most places I never use the cover. I'm just wondering why they put tabs on it. The one I have never got off by itself in use. It can easily be taken off. Any pictures of the new covers ?

Here are the pictures of the one way coil cover, these are not all that new. I would say they have been out for a year or 2 now, just a wild guess.

Just tried my little wedge sticks to hold the latch open while working on another latch.

That didn't work, cover is still on there.

Okay here is the trick.

I was just about ready to trash the cover so I started with the single outside latch on the side pulling the latch open while pulling the cover down in that area. So now I can see I have enough space between the bottom of the coil and the top edge of the cover, so I put one my little 1/8" sticks in the space to keep it from going back closed. Now I look and notice all the latches on that side loose. So that little bend I made in the outside pulled all the latches loose.

So now I go to the outside latch on the other side and done the same thing, and next thing I know the cover is one hand and the coil is in the other.

You would think they would give instructions for the removal of the cover.

Well I got the nerve after cleaning to put the cover back on the coil. Then I thought I got try it again and I had it off in a couple of minutes. It's all about getting that outside side latch open and pushing it down until you get the cover bowed and then putting something in between the coil and the cover to keep it from going closed. Then just do the other side and the cover is off.

I hope this will help somebody else.

I think they dropped the ball when they didn't tell anybody how to get it off. Once you do it, it isn't all that bad, but off and on I spent the day fiddling around and had to put it down a few times because I was about to trash it.

Take a deep breath and see what you can do and then get back with us. Wouldn't that be something if we took care of 2 guys in one day.

But I am with everybody else, the coil cover is not needed.

in the vast majority of cases it is not needed (I've never worn one out in that manner.) But they do make money selling covers.
I'd be willing to bet 98% of coil trouble is the cable, the majority being the connector and the rest being where it enters the loop.
And hip mounts have the most stress.

I trashed my cover - living in Florida I'm always on the beach - tons of sand even in the soil - haven't broke/cracked/worn out a coil yet and used it hard for over 5 years.
