Looking For Feedback On 705 Gold Pack

Hello, I've owned an Xterra 705 for just under a year. I absolutely love it! I've found over 1300 coins in the first 7 months and a small handful of rings.

My brother who has been detecting for about 35 years and mother almost as long have decided that they are ready to sell their Tesoros Toltec 100 detectors and buy 705's. I bought mine with the stock 9" coil. I used that for the first few months and did pretty well with it but eventually bought the following coils:

10.5" HF DD
6" HF DD
6" MF Concentric
10.5" MF DD

I have given all of them an equal chance before coming to this conclusion. I have done the best with the 10.5" HF DD and the 6" HF DD. In fact, I have listed the coils above in the order that I have done the best with. We are mainly coin and ring shooters but also don't mind digging up some relics from time to time. My question is....

Being that I have done the best with the 10.5" HF DD I'm inclined to recommend to my brother & mother to buy the 705 gold pack being that it comes with a HF coil. I think I'm looking at this the right way or am I fooled based on my experience with the HF coils. Personally I don't believe that I have had my 9" stock coil back on the detector since I started using the 10.5 HF coil. I just seem to do that much better with it. I'm not sure that they are going to want to buy more than one additional coil and even that purchase may be awhile being that they are about to buy the detector.

I'd really be interested in hearing from people that bought the 705 Gold Pack with no additional coils or someone that nearly exclusively uses the 10x5 HF coil. I'm really curious how you do with it as far as coins and jewelry goes. Being that the 10.5" HF DD is pretty heavy, I don't think my mother would be able to manage it on some of those days when we are out for 8 hours or so. I know there are days when I have to switch to the 6" HF just to give my arm a break. I expect that the 10x5 would be more suited for her from a weight standpoint compared to it's bigger brother.

Mapper....I haven't used the 10.5 DD HF coil but I have used the 5X10 DD HF coil. And found it to be an excelant coil. Since the 705 now comes with the 5X10 DD HF coil I would suggest that you add the 9" Concentric 3kHz coil since you all like coin hunting. Deep copper and silver simply don't have a chance
with this coil. HH TomB

I might add if the 10.5 DD HF coil gets heavy you might want to invest in Doc's Swingy Thingy. The most amazing invention ever developed for stress free, comfortable Metal Detecting.

Gday

Yes IMHO you are on the right track
I believe the 5x10" HF DD that comes with the Gold Pack is the pick of the litter for everyday hunting.
Its also extremely light and its solid base slides over the ground surface

The 6" HF DD is also a little beauty but probably a bit too small for most everyday detecting situations...I use mostly use mine when I find a spot with dense targets or for gold.
I must admit though that I do prefer DD coils.
happy hunting

Dumb newb question here..... I just ordered a new 705 and am waiting for it to arrive. I got the standard Concentric coil as I was told 7.5 is best for everyday multi purpose hunting.... The "expert" told me the HF coils are better for prospecting gold and that you lose a lot of depth if you use them for coins and relics..... Was i given the wrong info? Please explain....Thanks!

I have found little difference in depth between the 9" MF concentric and 5x10" HF DD coils
I a have a lot of hours with both the above coils and I would say the statement that "you lose a lot of depth on coins or relics" is not very accurate
It may be technically correct ( Digger ...HELP !... lol )
but if it is correct I would say it would be in the order of 10%

Try them both and see which works best for you.
Some folks prefer concentric and some DD
Rest assured they both work well on coins and relics

Thank you for the response...... So lets say you have the stock MF coil and you were going to get 1 more coil "very expensive coils!" Would you get the DD HF or the DD MF......Thanks:wiggle:

That would be a tough call because in many parts of the country the DD MF coil seems works the best, while in Mapper's and my part of the country the DD HF coil definitely works the best. With the amt. of people beginning to like the Gold pkg. coil which is also a DD HF coil, I think many of them are beginning to realize that the HF coils work pretty good after all.

Mapper: Think the Gold package coil would be the way to go for your mom and brother. You and I both know the HF coils work the best in our part of the country and we already know that the 5 x10" DD HF coil is very good on small gold which would also make it pretty good on gold jewelry too. As far as your mom goes, maybe she could also get a 6" coil or borrow yours for when she starts wearing down during a long's day's hunt. Think its great that both your mom and brother metal detect too.

I just got the 10.5 DD HF coil about a month ago, have about 4 or 5 hours of use due to the weather here in Pa. But so far I really like it, went to a spot that's been hunted hard over the years by others and myself found the smallest button i ever found, the spot been sweep over many times but the HF coil picked it right out. can't wait to get some hours on this thing.

I have the standard 9" concentric, the 5x10 DD HF and the 6" DD HF and I would highly recommend she get the 5x10 DD HF, it is light weight and it is a better all around coil for detecting. And if you all ever decide to hunt for gold nuggets, it is the ideal coil for that.
