Looking for help on pinpointing.....

Finally just got my new T2 Thur. and took it out for a few hours. Had no problems with running high Sens. I took it to a couple different sites. One site (park) extremely trashy a another a farm field with fairly heavy trash. Both sites I know still hold old coins as I still find them with my other detectors. So felt confident on maybe finding some real deep ones. I had a terrible time pinpointing. I have detected for 33 years and have used many detectors but never had the problem pinpointing as I did using this machine. Is it possible that running sensitivity at over 90 was some of the problem? One example that made me put the T2 back in the truck and get out my old reliable was: Man GB @ 40, Sens @ 92, Desc @ 25 running in 2+ mode and 3 mode. I got a signal of 89-90 and said it was 11" deep. Pinpointing gave me a good spot by crossing the location from all directions. I dug about 10" deep and 8" dia. and nothing so ran detector over the hole and still got a good pinpoint dead center of the hole, so continued digging about another 5", still nothing. I started widening the hole and finally found the target a piece of can slaw at about 8" and a good 5" from where it was pinpointing. So got disgusted and put it in the truck and got out my other machine and within 5 min had dug an 1880 IH and went on to find a shield nickel and a V nickle. I guess I'm asking anyone if they have problems pinpointing in trashy areas and if someone could offer any suggestions.
I tried several different ways to pinpoint but other signal made it impossible.

I first pinpoint in the usual way. Then I turn 90 degrees and pinpoint again along a line that runs through my first pinpoiint spot. This seems to work fine for me.

DD coils pinpoint differently than concentrics because they read all along their center line from front to back, not just in the center.

That's the way I've always pinpointed but sure didn't work as seemed to be off by 5" as I said. Maybe I need to turn down my Pinpoint sounds??? I'll work with a little longer hopefully I'll discover the problem. I couldn't even narrow the search as there is so much trash in the ground.

You may have multiple targets and that makes it hard to pinpoint with any detector. Pinpoint mode has no discrimination.

Bill: Right in front of where the coil connects to the lower shaft there is a small round circle in the plastic on the top of the coil, I have found when pulling the pinpoint triger with the coil aginst the ground, when the highest and loudest tone are reached your target will almost always be directly under this circle. I've pinpointed with 20-30 different machines in the past 33 years of detecting. I've never had the problem I have had with this one, too large of coil. I only coin hunt and only old coins(no clad). So, I hunt in many old areas which generally have several years of accumulated trash also. All of this trash tends to mask the coins and the T2 does an OK job of picking them out. The problem is it is nearly impossible to pinpoint a deep coin with 4 to 5 pieces of trash under the same coil area. You see pinpoint is like all metal mode(no Descr) and makes it impossible to pinpoint the good target. Now if you wanted to dig an area over a foot in diameter it might be OK but some of my hunting is in old parks and that just can't be done. Don't get me wrong the T2 is would be good for the right type of hunting, but not the type of hunting I wanted it for. Relics would be good or open search with less trash, but I already have my detectors for these spots. I think everyone thinks I don't know how to pinpoint. Just trying to find someone else who may have solved the problem. I was led to believe this machine could separate good, my bad, maybe separation of coins with no trash.
I do think my dream might be closer to being achieved with either a smaller double D or a smaller Concentric coil.

A couple of things. You can experiment by pinpointing using just the beep. I've compared it to my VCO center and it's awefully close. You just have to practice "hearing" the most center sounding beep.

But, how will any detector pinpoint when there is trash nearby? Aren't they all non discriminatory in pinpoint?

Second, have you tried turning the sensitivity down? This is a perfect situation to try it in. I've used it in pinpoint when other targets were near by. Don't know how well it will work on deep ones but I don't think it would be a problem. I've tuned down pinpoint near large metal objects and it worked pretty well.

If it's really trashy you might want to just try pinpointing on one plane (x or y). Go with the swing with the fewest hits (least trash) and VCO your way to center. I feel you pain to a point (4 or 5 targets per swing) but have managed my way in pinpoint in 95% of these cases.

I did have one problem like you spoke of. Dug a 12" deep hole and found the coin on the side of a 6" wide hole at about 5" deep. And it was ringing dead center in pinpoint. Was not from a nearby signal though. I think it was the lay of the coin.

Let us know what you come up with cause it seems like your hunting in extreme conditions judging by your experience and problem.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I was trying just the beep as felt that was my best choice.
You ask how any detector would pinpoint with trash nearby. Some detectors w/excellent Discrimination can be cranked up and still not loose deep signals.
I will try turning the sensitivity down but was afraid of loosing depth.
Yes these may be extreme conditions, but I know the old coins are still there as I pulled a 1907 Barber half a couple weeks ago w/ Sov GT only 6 inches but have gone over same spot with 4 or 5 different machines and never got the hit. Was just hoping this machine could do what the GT did only at a faster recovery.
