Looking to buy a smaller coil

I'm looking to buy a smaller coil for my Explorer II since I am having diffuculty with target seperation using my stock coil. <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">
Can anyone help me identify which coils size and makes I should consider? Which is the best?

The options you have are:

Each of these coils has its supporters and detractors. I've used all of them at one time or another and for smaller coils, I prefer the Minelab 8" coil followed by the other third-party coils. Others will most assuredly have different opinions.

so far, i like it. it's 5x10 elliptical. solid bottom design. lightweight and smooth swinging.
depth looks pretty good and it's stable and quiet. with a little effort, it gives a signal and id's pretty well a 9" deep quarter i have in my test area.
i tried a ML 8" before and didn't like it. it falsed, chattered, was unstable, and id'd anything over about 5" deep as iron, top left screen. i noticed some others have said the same thing about it too. but, maybe i just had a bad one.
i might find out soon if i had a bad one before, as Minelab is supposed to be sending me a new 8" coil.
for sure, i need something for in trash. the stock coil is missing good targets that are masked by trash. i found that out recently on a 5" deep 1909 barber quarter that the stock coils have walked right over numerous times.
good luck with your decision. sometimes, (and i hate to say it because it's not easy unless your rich or something), you just have to try them out to see which one you like.

I have made some great finds with the XS and most of them have been with the 8 inch coil from ML.....
I give it 5 stars out of a possible 5 star rating <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">

I have made some exciting finds with my Minelab 8, performance is quite good but in brushy stubble I hate it, it nearly got the frisby fling a few times. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=""> A full bottom scuff cover would do wonders.

Have you seen any of big K's recent advertising, I personally found it so offensive I will no longer purchase from them.

that the open coil would be a problem, especially since I had 20 years of using detectors with solid coils, but I really never have any major problem with the snagging, sure once in awhile but very minor instances. The size, the weight, the lack of any exposed wrapped around the stem coil wire, makes it a perfect brush beater. <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">

In addition to D(VA)'s observations. I have a 4" round coil that I don't care for. I bought my Joey coil from "Doc's Place" maybe 5-6 months ago and I like it. The elliptical design allows you to cover more ground faster and when you "hear" a possible good target being masked, you can usually move around it and seperate it from trash. Sometimes I hunt in trash so heavy it drives me nuts. The trick is to sweep very slow. The only objection to the Joey coil I have is it's not water proof. So I'm hesitant to hunt with it even in heavy dew? I have had good luck with it <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">
