Yeah I hit those penny piles ever so often. I got tired digging them the last time and left 30-40 for the next sucker. 
I hit an area at a high school some years back where the students must have had a "penny pitch" as there were at least 200-300 pennies laying all over this one area. I dug aand picked up a ton and gave up. Pennies ain't worth anything to the kids so they just throw them away.

Yes....pennies rock! Especially the rotten zincers that get rolled up and put back into circulation. Our revenge for TAXES
