lots of trash

Hi, Randy. I'm running with a 9" concentric coil that came with the 505. By the way i have your book, It helped me greatly to understand the 505. Thanks

Tracking is like having Automatic ground balance that is updated "on the fly". So if you have it on Tracking, you don't need to perform a ground balance or even check it during the hunt. On the 705 there is a feature called Tracking Ground Balance Offset. This allows the user to hunt with Tracking, just as you are doing now. But it gives you the advantage of being able to offset the ground balance either negatively or positively. And, you maintain that offset in a tracking mode. Personally, I like to run with a positive ground balance offset. To me, it is like I'm fooling the detector into thinking the ground is more mineralized than it really is. Some of us believe that a positive ground balance lets us hunt a bit deeper than a perfectly ground balanced detector. But running with a positive ground balance can create chatter and some falsing. That is why, if you are having chatter in your sites, you might consider running with a negative GB.

If you set the Tracking up with an offset................to make the detector more positive, lower the ground balance number (actually represents the phase angle of the ground, often referred to as ground phase). To make the ground balance offset more negative, use the + pad to increase the ground balance number.

I would recommend you back off the Sensitivity. That should take care of the issues you're having. But next time you go hunting, just for giggles, check the GB number and let us know what it is. That way we can help you determine if your sites would benefit from using a DD coil.

Perfect Randy ...... Now i understand and will try the GB offset (wasn't sure what it really did til now) but first i will mess around with sensitivity to see what happens and will report it back here.
My ground balance numbers all around this area are usually between 13-16 and mostly in the 13 number with occasional 9...... I will check the sandpit a little closer

Thanks so much.

Joe

Ouch! If your ground phase number is running in the teens, your soil has what I would consider to be high levels of magnetic mineralization. As such, a DD coil will perform much better at those sites. JMHO HH Randy

I just went out to my front yard which is desert landscape and my ground balance is 13 ..... I do need to get a DD Coil but i guess it will be up to me to decide which one and which frequency but leaning towards the 10 X 5 DD HF then get the 6" DD HF after i raise more money as i would like to do some Nugget shooting which i can walk to the desert washes right from my house........... and Quartzsite Az is about two hours from here in desert hills az..... there is no such thing as black topsoil like back east in Pa :detecting:
Thanks Randy for your input and i am really starting to get the hang of this great machine

Randy.....
I went back to the volleyball sand pit today and continually got a ground balance between 10-12. I did like you said and lowered the sensitivity back to about 15 and it cleared up more but not completely. I then did the ground balance offset trying it first to -3 and then again to +3 and while it did help more the -3 seemed to do better and got about two inches deeper than when in +3 ...... I dont really understand the balance offset but it did help. as soon as i did that i found a 10 peso's mexican coin that looks like brass around the outer edge with a coin placed in the middle.....
thanks,
Joe
