Louis Klatte

Member
Found an octagon shaped token today that says Louis Klatte on one side and good for quart milk on the other.
Never seen such a thing
Can anyone help with the mystery?

I am not sure, but I have found a number of tokens---some with a monetary value from 1 cent to 20 cents, others for free grocery items--- like that and learned a bit about them. In the 20s and 30s in rural communities, especially in the South, money was hard to get and a lot of bartering went on. A lot of small businesses, especially groceries and hardware stores, issued their own tokens that were exchangeable in their stores. Your Klatte token might be something like that. I am not sure if you can do a search locally and see if there was a Louis Klatte business in the past.

Hope this helps.

What state was this found in? There were several Klatte's arrived in the US in 1851. All moved to Wisconsin, Below is a list from the ships log.
# Name age sex from moved to
197 Martha Klatte 11y3m f Meklenburg Wisconsin
198 Maria Klatte 9y6m f Meklenburg Wisconsin
199 Louise Klatte 7y3m f Meklenburg Wisconsin
200 Hulda Klatte 5y4m f Meklenburg Wisconsin
201 Caroline Klatte 21y4m f Meklenburg Wisconsin

Maybe some of their offspring.
