My 1819 half cent story made it into the Garrett Searcher for fall. I was psyched!!! I didn't get first prize, but got the hat and book, and best of all my story was published!!!

Alright!:clapping:Man, that's awesome!:please:Congrats on being published in The Garrett Searcher!:cheers:That's a really great issue as well. That's cool that you got a hat and book. I'm gonna buy those two new books. They look pretty good.:thumbup:I must say, that 1819 half cent is quite a find! Older than any of mine and I've found a few. Love those large cents, man. Thanks for sharing!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Good for you! How long was your original story? I have a binder full of past Searcher issues and I frequently reread them especially during the winter. I like a testimonial even better when it comes from somebody from this forum. I'm going to pencil your user name next to that great old half cent! (Hopefully, I'll nab one of my own some day.)

I'm glad some regulars are getting their articles published in the Searcher. It's nice to read articles and to be familiar with the author too. And you wrote a great article too. :super:

Geez, I never saved a copy of what I wrote. It was just a bit longer than the article they did. I just told them, how I waited, and waited until that ground was just thawed enough in March to find that coin. I was leaving to move back to Florida and had about 2 weeks to go, and it kept snowing. I was hoping to use my new Ace250 and hit that yard, the house is 200+ years old, there was bound to be something out there... Well I went to the areas the sun was thawing and low and behold within 10 feet I got a tone for the 1 cent, but it bounced back to quarter... I dug up an old square nail, I looked throught the small pile of dirt on my rag and saw what looked like a slug... when I brushed off some dirt, I saw "United States" and what looked like wheat... NOT A SLUG!!! Washed it off and there was my first find, an 1819 half cent. Not in the best shape, hey it could have been there for 190 years, I know I will not forget it. My heart was racing. I have it wrapped up in my lock box. Since I came to FL, I have not gotten out at all.... I am waiting for the heat to go away. All there really is down here is beach hunting, there is nothing really old to hunt down here... I am going back to MA in the spring hopefully for good. But in the next few weeks the weather will change, and I am doing some early morning hunting at the beach.

You say nothing old?

There is a CW battle field north of DeLand. I found a 1839 cent in Orange City at an old train station. I also found a 1700 Chinese coin. You will also find a lot more gold in Fl. than MA. Just look at all the gold the kids are wearing. Hit the tot lots. Isn't Saint Augustine the oldest city in the U.S?

congratulations on a great find and I am glad you were recognized in the 2009 Garrett Searcher.
