Maple Sugar Tap?

Any ideas? This is and iron pin/nail, that is hollow form the center to the end. I think it is a tap for maple trees. I found it on a battle site on the Union Side, so I'm not sure.

The end looks spalled by a hammer. Hollow. Maybe a leather working tool. A hole punch.

I have the exact one in my holster makin stuff.

A leather punch may be correct. This item was found near some Union rifle pits. I'll dig it out and look at it a little closer.
