if you find a chain & dont know if it's gold or not = frequently, you can put it to your nose and smell it & it will smell like metal, junk metal, if so. Gold does not usually smell. I just remembered this trick - from an old silversmith to a younger one years ago. Now I'm the old silversmith <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> Steve in so az
 
Does the chain have to be smelled when first found or will this work after its been found for a long time? Also, does this work on silver chains?
