MD IN TAMPA BAY FL

I never had any problems when I lived there, but I think it also depends on where you go. Tampa is loaded with sweet sites and I have many fond memories of the place. now that I'm no longer there (or even in FL for that matter) I'll give up some sites for ya to check out.

of course Ybor City has it's heritage, but for my money it was Port Tampa that I lived in and searched (Port Tampa as in south Tampa near McDill AFB...not the Port of Tampa). Port Tampa is loaded with old homes although with the market in past years a lot of the old houses have been bought up and fixed up, but you can still find houses that are begging for searches. in the south part of Port Tampa is Picnic Island park which is on the bay.....LOTS of clad, rings, etc to be found but the park has only been improved in the last 30 years so you won't find anything old there.

now for the sweet part.....just about ANYWHERE in Port Tampa it is possible to find artifacts from Teddy Roosevelt's Troops. seems back during the Spanish American War time frame troops would ride the railroad down there to embark on ships at the port and the entire area was basically a campsite for the troops that were waiting. there is one house/bar/general store (different things thru the years) that back in the early 70s the owner was doing some remodeling and found the receipt book for the store that listed merchandise purchased by the quartermaster for whatever company or such. not sure what else was found but if memory serves he donated the book to the University of Tampa. I do know that bullets, buckles, etc have been found. basically you'll want to go to the intersection of Interbay and S. Westshore and just start in a spiral pattern searching for sites thru the area. in the very back of Port Tampa is also the remains of a hunting lodge from turn of the century, but it's difficult to get to and it's basically right next to the southwest fence of McDill. people forget that where McDill stands today used to be just farm pasture and swamp. back in the 70s it was easy to crawl under the fence there and have a look around but I would not suggest you do that now.....nope...don't even try....really....seriously....don't.
