Met a bunch of hunters today!

Was invited to hunt the field where a cache got spread out. The land owner had a whole crew of hunters come down to hunt it from Peoria. Big John, Mike, Steve, Steve and Dennis.(Hope I got em all right!) Great bunch of guys!
Hunted the field a while but he chisel plowed the pig "stuff" the cache was found in. So not much was found, nothing by me. Mike found a walking half and a dime and Big John found a barber quarter and an SL. I think someone else found a dime also. It was tough hunting that plowed field. Wish I could have got in on it before he plowed it.
After everyone had enough I suggested we go to a nearby beat up town park. We went there a while and I managed one thin dime. I was in ferrous with a wide open screen. This thing gave a low tone and locked on next to iron. Did not bounce right at all. I knew it wasn't a nail though. When I cut the plug it was high with my probe and bounced right in the hole. When I put the plug back I went over it and got a nail hit.
Only coin so far today, but since it is silver I am happy. I don't think I am done yet, still have a couple more hours left to hunt. I may go back out but thought I would post this first.

Hey Ric,
Glad to see you posting again on a regular basis. Always enjoy your posts.
Finding a coin in ferrous that hits way left is one of the things that is hard to explain.
Sometimes you get a bounce from right to left with high tones, sometimes left hit with broken high tones, and sometimes stays left with no high tones but still sounds different than just iron. My guess is that the bouncing is caused by the explorer primarily locking onto the trash or good target from sweep to sweep. Think when it stays left perhaps the targets are in electrical contact and get a true average.
Actually have no real clue but know what you are saying- it does sound different and even in Ferrous you can still hear a diference on a far left hit with practice. Bet it you had IM above 12-13 you would have missed it.

I'm out in CT on business and drove around looking at 1600-1700 sites. Gives a fellow major wood. Left the explorer at home. Whoops. Someday need to hang out east and dig some of them big coppers.

How the he!! could you go to the east coast with out an explorer? Man, that has to be eating away at you! I know, you probably don't have time even if you did have it. But still, who needs sleep? I want a 1700's dated coin so bad I can taste it!
You are definitely correct. It did sound a tad higher/different than a nail but not much. Where it locked on and stayed is about where a barber bounces to then back. Not extreme left corner of course, but probably not more than one full cursor right of a nail. Me being the lucky bastidge that I am, just happened to notice it. I probably walked over 50 hits that sounded just like it and didn't slow down.

and it was a pleasure to meet you. You have to love the old parks! I'll post a pic of the half later, I have to go on a trip this morning. HH
