MF 10.5"DD v MF 9"CON Coils

Hi

Have recently got my grubby paws on a MF 10.5" DD coil to see if I can gain a little depth over my stock MF coil. The soil in England is not to badly mineralised so shouldn't be too much of a factor. Am I right in thinking that big DD will have a slight depth advantage, mainly because of its physical size, and maybe also because of the better ground balancing characteristics?. I'll mainly be looking for coins in ploughing and pasture.

Thanks

I agree that you should get better depth over the stock coil. For me I believe that our soil makes a difference and in my area I do much better with the 10.5 HF than the 10.5 MF coil when compared to the stock coil.

Is that because your local soil is more mineralised?.....What kind of numbers do you see when you are ground balanced?, just to give me an idea.

Thanks

I'll be honest, it's winter here as we speak and I haven't been out detecting in nearly 4 months. My typical ground balance number is slipping my mind but I want to say 18-21.

Thanks Mapper

You must be itching to get out again!.

I ground balanced in my back garden this evening and it evened out around 50-52. Is this more or less mineralised than the lower numbers?

Thanks for your replies.

The higher the ground phase number, the lower the mineralization of the soil. If you are capable of properly ground balancing your X-TERRA with a ground phase of 50 - 52, your soil would be considered moderately mineralized. In my opinion, with those numbers, you don't need a DD coil to combat the mineralization. A 10.5 inch DD will cover more ground with each swath, than a 9-inch concentric. But where I hunt (with moderate soil mineralization) I actually get better depth with the 9-inch concentric at 3 kHz than I do with the 10.5 inch DD at 7.5 kHz. Not to mention a more accurate TID. I just have to make sure I overlap the swaths by 1/2, opposed to 1/3 when using the DD. JMHO HH Randy

Thanks Digger

I've heard a lot of good things about the 3Khz coil, its deffo on my wish list, feel like I should give the 10.5 DD MF a chance to proove its self having just purchased it. hopefully at this Sunday's club dig which is near a known Roman site and will be pasture fields.

Thanks

Keep the 10.5, you will regret getting rid of it. I use both freq 10.5's and have excellent luck and it looks like your soil is about the same as mine here in Missouri. The 10.5's will go deep and work better than the stock coil in iron trash. Here is proof.......

Let us know how you do, as I'm also interested in the 10.5" MF Coil.

Thanks Morelic, I will be keeping the 10.5 DD for the foreseeable future but might add the 3KHz to my line-up too. I will for sure let you guys know how I get on this Sunday.....maybe get some pic's up if it isn't to tricky.

Also, I've seen some people on these pages recommend ground balancing with 0 sensitivity?. Can anyone explain the thinking behind this please?

Many thanks
