MIAMI SOUTH BEACH July 13-15 report

Hopster

New member
I took a mini-vacation to South beach this last weekend hoping the location would yield better than other Florida beaches I have tried.
Fri afternoon I went into the water although it was way too rough. Waves 1-2 with whitecaps due to easterly wind of 15 mph gusting to 22.
Area hunted generally was 1/4 mile north and south of 15th street. (not that I covered all of that ).
Very hard hunting in the washing machine. My method was mask/snorkel and weights, although I had not enough weights for this.
Excal II set to Disc -"1", sensitivity - 12 o clock down to 2 o clock .
Machine would not hold a steady threshold no matter what sensitivity but only on day 3, can't figure that one out.
Diving to the bottom I had a hard time staying on the target spot, and the Grey Ghosts were barely audible - future modifications needed there.
Within an hour I had a fake gold bauble from a bracelet, fake toe ring, a silver.925 ring looking like it had been there a month or so, tiny gold disc from a bracelet or whatever.
The good part is although targets were few, at least a third were jewelry of some sort.
That beats anywhere else I have hunted even though no gold was found.

Tried again next day - water was worse, waves breaking overhead in 4 feet of water constantly knocking me off balance or tearing headphones off.
Gave up after an hour of this and hit the high tide line on the beach.
This area was paved with clad coins and bottlecaps but I managed to find a decent, although water logged dress watch called a "Titan edge" with SS mesh band and saphire crystal.
Also found what looks like an antique silver pendant with a link above it with a bead that looks like onyx.
And a fake gold bead chain with enameled pendant, all thin gold plated.

Thunderstorms put a stop to the hunt.

Next morning hunted the beach again - nothing of value.
Afternoon the winds diminished a bit so I hit the water, still rough.
After an hour the water calmed then a ocean speedboat race started just off the beach.
3 classes of racers including unlimited nitro powered.
And 6 helicopters following the boats, filming.
Noise was louder than my Grey Ghosts so could no longer hear targets.
And besides - it was awesome watching from a hunderd yards away.
Only a few clad coins on that hunt.

Verdict: My sampling was too small to judge as far as water hunting and bad conditions but I think the gold sinks fast here due to the wave action.
It is very worthwhile and I will return when I can be sure wind is from the west.
I could only cover about 25 percent of the area I would normally cover in same amount of time.
A lifeguard told me he knew of 4 people that work the water regularly so as large as this beach is there will be unrecovered finds to be .. err .. found.
Finding the jewelry at the waterline up to ten feet above tells me there's more there too.
Next time I will :
Wear at least 20 lb of weight including ankle weights.
Try to soundproof my Grey ghosts against outside noise and water noises.
Add a chin strap to the headphones.
Check the weather and avoid easterly winds.
Bring my scoop to hit the knee deep zone in case the weather goes bad.

Wow! Very interesting post thank you. I am trying to buy an Excalibur at the moment, I have a surf master 2 and want to upgrade. Are the grey ghosts headphones? Have you found 26,000 dollars worth of stuff with 1 of your detectors? Awesome! Is there a difference between excalibur 1 and 2? Which is your preference? Thanks for the post any advice on Excalibur's will be greatly appreciated. Good luck, Merlin

Although off topic and not in the order you asked them :
Yes I made AT LEAST 26 grand with my original excalibur 800 in a 4 year period.
I was hunting hotel beaches on an island where many tourists from Japan and korea vacation.
(Please don't ask which island).
My Thai girlfriend would sell many of my finds to her coworkers in a garment factory.
By count, I found probably 150 platinum and gold wedding bands from Japan.
Although these sold at 800-900 dollars new -I sold most as scrap around 50-60 each.
Another typical once a month find were the huge 18k mens rings with center rubys or sapphires and smaller diamonds.
I think they are called signet rings, not sure.
The biggest find was a "Yakuza" ring which was a huge ring worn by Yakuza bosses to show status.
This particular ring was appraised at 11 thousand by a jeweler. This would put the actual whosesale value around 6 grand and I think I got at least 5 grand when it was all done.
It had 1 oz platinum, a 1.2 carat high grade ruby, 20 square blue sapphires, and 46 tiny diamonds.
I scrapped the ring and had many rings made from the stones.
I paid $60 per ring to have a wax model( off the shelf) made into various rings that were custom made
by my jeweler friend. The Thai girls would buy the stones from me, the gold to make the rings, and the 60 bucks.
They would get a new ring custom sized for about half of what it would cost them at a jewelry store.
And I would get max value for my finds that way. I "parted out" many many rings in this manner.
And yes I had gold made into rings that they wanted as well, without stones.
I found an occasional nice diamond ring and did the same.
And I still have a few blue sapphires from that "ringzilla" left so I have technically not finished reaping the profit yet.
I spend at least 6 hours per week in the water digging, and I dug ALL non-ferrous targets.
I dug at least one pull tab for each dollar I made, for sure.
Those were the days ........ Florida is not at all like that, and I'm fairly sure most USA beaches will work you harder for the money in much rougher, cloudier, colder water too.
No matter what you end up using for a detector, you must stay focused on that pot-o-gold so to speak.
There is nothing better than diving into the hole you just dug in the sand in the water and seeing that flash of gold peering through the silt as it settles away.
Better than that is when you see the sparkle of diamonds or rubies, emeralds or sapphires. That is where the money is.
That's what makes you go back the next day or week to get the thrill again, it's addictive.

Now for detectors, I own all 3 generations of excalibur.
My first choice for trash laden surf detecting would be the original "sword' model with the seasearch 8 inch coil.
They come up occasionally on ebay but the coils are not available as replacements. I had to buy a second gen coil for mine and I went with the 10 inch not knowing any better.
Next choice would be the Excalibur II with 8 inch coil, for same conditions, or 10 inch coil, for all around hunting.
The second gen Excal is just a backup for my Excal II which is my main unit while I'm repairing the old sword model.
The differences between the II and second gen Excal 1000 are mainly the headphones (Koss), the wiring for phones, and shielding wrapped around the plastic tube, better batteries.
I paid 1075 for my excal II 1000 on Ebay and it was near new with a spare battery.
Made more sense than paying over 1500 for the same stuff new with sales tax thrown in.
I modded the end cap for the Ghosts and off I went after mounting on a better than factory "Pluggers" travel shaft.

Yes the Grey Ghosts are headphones. There are other choices although I'm not sure if the other brand(s) are submersible.
If water conditions permit- I prefer hunting with mask and snorkel, getting my face right there as I dig the hole. Seems faster to me than using a scoop.

Seemed to be the best way to hunt South Beach but I don't know what the locals do there.
BTW never saw anyone else detecting there in 3 days.
Wish I lived closer.

Hi Hopster,
Thanks for the very interesting story, it was a great read. You have helped so much I really appreciate it. I have just bought a boat for diving off, and I'm just waiting for my scuba regs to be serviced and then I'm going treasure hunting under water. I live in Devon (uk) we have 10 metre tides here, it's hard to know where to search on the beach with such a large tide range, so I'm planning on some wreck dives. Lots of old ships sunk around here with gold on board. I've done some research on line and have a few places in mind... I hope I can find a second hand Excalibur to help me on my quest. I will post up how I get on. Thanks again dude, good luck, Merlin

Glad you had a nice time, thanks for contibuting to the economy, come on down anytime, I live here and hunt the beaches most every day. So do a couple of dozen other regulars. There are literally a couple of hundred serious water hunters in the fifty mile stretch of beaches between So. Beach and West Palm Beach not to mention the numerous dry sand group.. South Beach is constantly hunted, by night the locals, by day the locals and detecto tourists. The water is very much sanded in and the sand is deep, so finds are mostly fresh drops. Plenty of trash between the wet sand and chest deep. Party people are piggies. Parking is expensive and sometimes difficult to find. Excal and Aquasound are the detectors I see most commonly, but you will see all brands. One has to work hard and smart to make consistant finds. It would be a mistake to think this is treasure paradise, but there is a lot of coast and lots of beach goers and one can never get it all. So come on down, but don't expect to pay for the trip with your finds. HH

Thank You Roy,
I had a feeling that life guard was way off in thinking there were only 4 regular water hunters there.
Apparently judging from the wet sand line nobody digs coins or caps, or there are those who don't bag their trash finds.
There's a lot of acerage there from knee deep to chest deep at such a shallow beach, seems like even a dozen guys could not cover all of it in a week.
I pity anyone that has to find parking there for 5 or 6 hours at a stretch. I paid 20 bucks a day via the hotel so that was easy.
The soft sand is not encouraging as I noted above- looks like the gold sinks fast there (or gets picked up fast as you say).

One question: Are you fellows water hunting at night with scoops ?

One question: Are you fellows water hunting at night with scoops ?

Yes, I hunt at night w/ scoops in the water as a few others I know. Certain times of the year I stay way at night as fish migration increases the shark presence.

LOL South Beach. I was there 4 years ago now. I can see why its hunted in the daytime by many detectorists. But nobody gets it all and I got a few coins. Only gold ring I found in Florida was at Hollywood beach.

Anyway nice story. I have tried snorkeling in waves and its NOT fun. Frustrating to say the least.

Good luck in your next adventures.
