Minelab Explorer SE

You better sell it quick. Way to much trouble to learn. How much you want for it??....ha ha

I agree with Ron. The best thing to do is to do the testing yourself.
Take sample items that you are interested in finding and put your
SE in digital mode. Sweep you coil over each item until you memorize
the digital #'s for each item. After a few hunts, you will become
beter at understanding how your machine works and how it responds to
targets. I did a little-bit of testing of some clad coins and this
is what I got.
nickel 06-10
dime 03-28
penny 07-26,27
quater 00-30

Most of the gold rings I tested ran near the nickle range.
To the point.. The best thing to do is practice.
Good luck! I hope this helps a little.

Make yourself a test garden somewhere in your yard with silver, copper, and clad coins, jewelery, etc, and do as was mentioned, practice until you learn the numbers. You'll be amazed how quick you will remember and you can learn any new detector you get from then on very quickly in your own private test area with "in soil" targets.

Don't forget to make a map

Good hunting, Bill

Why not keep it simple that way its far more fun.

You will also find just as much as you will trying to complicate this brilliant detector that was introduced to the world at Corfe castle in Dorset England 0n the 2nd September,2006 at 2.30pm.:ukflag:

Within minutes in the first field it had located a Silver coin over 2000 years old using a simple programme.:detecting:Jerry.

Learn the tones first, they usually are more accurate than digital.

I am very new to this and while I do not have an SE YET, I can relate and will tell you my experiences which are very fresh. OH I use a quattro so it is a similar machine.

I was very frustrated and lost at first and really wondered about keeping the Quattro. But I read the book they had on it, they have one on mastering the explorer, I would suggest getting it as it is by the same author and his explainations are great and to the point.

I air tested some, practiced in my back yard, air tested again with the junk as well and wrote it all down to help me remember. Read the book over and over which helped as things that were said did not make sense till I used the MD.

Slowly but surely, things started to click. Oh I found that when I started to focus more on the sound of things my results improved more quickly and dramatically. I still use the numbers but the sound gives the deciding vote. Again test everything you can think of and write it down and look at what you have. For items of the same number scan one then the other till you have a good idea how they sound different. If at all. But in my case you can pretty much tell.

Go out as often as you can even if it is the back yard. Another thing I did which may not be effective but it seemed to help me was to go out even when I could not dig. I would just listen to the sounds and try to see if I could figure out what was there how to pinpoint etc. Of course you cannot say for sure there what it was but i helped my ear learn what to listen for.

One day it just clicked and I started digging more coins than junk. Often I got junk because it was a close call as to what it was so I decided to check. I have gotten so much better at which signal is a solid target. Yes I need to expand what I will dig but for now I just wanted to have some success where as in the beginning I dug so many scrap pieces of aluminum siding and pieces of copper wire I was ready to give up.

It took a bit of time but I just got out and practiced and then analyzed everything I did till I began making sense out of things.

Also read this forum as well as any other forum you can as that will give you a weath of info that would take years to get on your own.
