Minelab Explorer VS X Terra 70

Hello,

I have been reading the posts from both of these great detectors for quite a while now and I own an ACe 250 and would love to upgrade to one of these monsters. Is there anybody that can tell me which one is better? Heavier? Why I should go with one or the other? Does one scans deeper than the other? Any clues that can help me decide would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance!!!

P.s Does the explorer uses double AA like the Terra 70 does?

Yes but twice as many.
My advice would be get them both if you can afford it.
And a case of AA's

I have no experience with the X Terra 70 but have used the Explorer for eight years. Here is what I have gathered through reading the forum. The X Terra 70 is much lighter than the Explorer. Very favorable reports on the X Terras. The Explorer ID's deeper, not sure exactly by how much. If it was the other way around everyone would be using an X Terra. You should be able to find some comparisons somewhere in the Findmall. I don't think the X Terra is multiple frequency like the Explorers. I have been waiting eight years for a lightweight version of the Explorer but the X Terra is not that - still waiting. ML did just come out with a new model which I heard is lighter - the Safari.

Good luck and HH - BF

I just traded my X-Terra 70 for an Explorer SE.
I loved the X-Terra but the Explorer does scan deeper.
Yes the Explorer is heavier but not that much. (3.7 lbs excluding batteries).
You won't be dissapointed with the X-Terra 70 by any means but if you have the money get the Explorer.
The XT70 is easy to operate. The Explorer can have a learning curve if you start tweaking settings but it also works fine with the factory presets.
Both are turn on and go if want to use them that way.

I think that you will be happy with either one and you will find lots of goodies with both . I had both the 70 and the SE at one time, luckily they were both rather new to me at the time but I did have a few months head start with the 70. I really liked the 70 and found a lot of good stuff with it but the day that I got the SE I knew that I was going to like it. The 70 started sitting longer and longer in the corner until the point that I never gave it a second look as I really liked the SE. I sold the 70 as I knew that I didnt need that much money tied up in detectors and I have never looked back. I think that the 70 is little easier to learn and it feels a ton lighter, but I dont really notice the weight of the SE now. Oh, and I love my SunRay Probe that goes with the SE!!!!! That alone, after using it, would be enough for me to go the SE route. Just my opinion, good luck!

Had an Exterra 70 for about 8 mos. traded it. Got an Explorer SE about a week ago, very happy with it. Total newbie to it but enjoy using and trying to learn it's language.

Thank you very much for all the replies!!!

You have three frequencies for the X-terra 70. But that depends on the coil you're using. Can't remember exactly what they were, something like 3kHz, 7 and 16.5....
The gold prospectors choice would be the 16.5kHz and the coin shooter would choose the low frequency coil for deep silver and copper. Like the Explorer it has auto\manual noise cancel and also manual/auto GB and Tracking. It even sounds the same when you first turn it on. It's a dandy detector. I liked mine a lot but it's no Explorer. I had to trade a lot of detectors in the course of a year and a half to get my explorer. It was worth the wait.

Get the SE! With a MD this adage applies, "The more you spend the more you'll get" Better ID'n, depth, unique features like the Learn feature which as far as I know, no other MD has this ability.

The X-70 is a great MD but to compare it to an SE is like comparing a Mustang to a ZR1 corvette.

Save yourself a few hundred dollars and get the new Safari so you can get the X-1 probe. You'll still get the power of an SE and it's geared more to be user friendly and will probably make the transition of an ACE 250 to a better machine more enjoyable.

Not taking nothing away form the 250 but when you go from that to a Minelab you'll feel you went from drawing on a chalk board to doing AutoCAD on a computer. Once you get familiar with it though it will simplify itself in time in your own mind and with how much you put in to it. The more time you put in to it and having a tenacious attitude to learning the machine it will not overwhelm and you will become like an old hand at it. I wish you well in what ever choice you make. If you want to see the manual for the Safari just PM your email as I can send it to you. Andy Sabisch posted the link on here as well but I forgot where it was and I am too lazy to look for it as I already have it. He posted it a few days ago so you should find it searching on here. Best to look at the manuals for the SE Pro & Safari and see how it "hits you" and then make your choice knowing what you'll be getting.

I own both. It is like owning a 1968 corvette and a 1968 camaro, both fantastic cars. Both fantastic detectors. I will give you my take. I use both of mine on a regular basis. X terra 70, 4 batteries last a real long time. The EX II, 8 batteries for not so long and rechargeables even less, maybe 4 hours of hunting. They both go real deep and despite some other replys, I have found seated dimes doen 10" w/ the X-70 with a pure perfect 38-40 reading. The ID has been spot on with X-70 using the standard 7.5 hz 10.5 coil.. I have found that the x-70 is the perfect all round machine but, gets easily confused by bottle caps. That is my only knock on it. It is light and has a large ID screen, no lit screen though, for us night hunters. Besides the weight, (can be overwhelming on long days) there isn't too much more to say about the ExII it is the best unit available. Even better I think the safari has the same processor as the Ex II with less weight. With all that being said go get a Bounty Hunter and leave the coins for me, ha ha, Good luck!!!!!
