Hello i have a sutuation thats going on with my upper explorer xs shaft it is slideing down on me out of the cam lock and i have read hear that there could be cracks ect but i havent found any is this fixable or not? thanks sas

I don't know how others have fixed this, but here's how I've fixed it. Any of several ways:

1) put a single wind (or two depending on how wiggly/loose it is) of black tape around the male portion. It only takes a single wind most of the time, because otherwise you won't even be able to get the rod to start being inserted

2) Add a dimple or dot of JB weld (or any other such contact cement type of hardener plastic compound) on to the inner tongue part that pushes up and down with the clasp. Let dry, then sample the snuggness. Start very small at first, because, if you find out it's still not creating a snug enough contact, you can always increase the thickness with a second go-round. Likewise if you made it too thick (clasp won't even shut), you can always file or grind back off a bit, to decrease thickness of that dimple/spot.

3) For field emergencies (rod keeps sliding down) I have sometimes had to scrounge for a toothpick type twig or splinter of wood, to use as a shim, shoved into the wiggle crevice :) Or, since I always carry a roll of black tape in the zipper portion of my apron, I've found myself doing a quick few winds to booger up the outside of the two rods connection point. Of course that means you'll no longer have an adjustable rod for the time-being, but it works for a quickee in the field.

Thank you so much for the help Tom im going too give it a try .

replacing the cam lock pad should fix it.
tap out the splined brass pin. Look at the way the old pad comes out, replace it with the new one put the lock lever back in place and tap the brass pin back in to its hole.

Tom has the idea, and the fix I used, although I used one round of clear shipping tape (like strong very sticky scotch tape). The tape is about two inches wide. Just wrap a layer on and carefully sliced down with an exacto knife and ruler so that it lays nice. Never had another problem with mine. I did take a pen and made a mark so I could see if it started slipping out again. Tightened it right up. No dimple for me. Maybe do that if you can't get it fixed with just tape.

I believe the cracks occurred mostly on the early XS machines. The cracks occurred in the case at the brass pin location, and are kind of hard to see. (I had one that did that). Another thing that can cause the shaft to slip out is the locking pad breaking, Minelab changed the locking tab somehow, using those red ones like shown in a prior post, and that reportedly took care of that problem. I have been told/read to NOT interchange upper shafts between new and old machines. It seems maybe there is just enough difference in the fit, to cause the locking tab to break or possibly crack the pin boss in the case, when you lock it down. If this is true or not, I don't know for sure, but don't interchange my shafts because I don't want to find out the hard way. If all else fails.............install the shaft and get out the trusty duct tape.......Good Luck.
