:minelab:How to clean Nickels????

Pick up some catsup packs at micky ds. Slit the top, and insert nickle. Allow to stay overnight then rinsr under clear water. You'll be surprised at the results.

Glad to have ya here! First don't clean a nickel if it is valuable!!!!
If they are not worth much but you want them to look better, you can do the catsup method, or a tumbler.
God bless!

Hey thanks! Glad to be here. I guess it's the vinegar in the catsup that cleans them. I usually tumble most of my clad and some other stuff in soap-water and aquarium gravel and it works great but not well on "old" nickels. Yes, I do check dates before cleaning. A guy on the Minelab forum told me to tumble them in vinegar and salt. I'm trying that right now over night on a V nickel that I found today. It's not a key date. 1907. It looks horrible right now. So black and worn I really had to struggle to read the date. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Anyway thanks for the info and I'm going to try the catsup thing...Dickie

plastic TV tray or plate and soak in a white vinegar and salt solution....the longer the dark ones soak, the cleaner they will be. Be sure to rinse good with clear water or otherwise they will corrode. Don't do this with valuable coins though just the ones you want to spend. I also use a scouring pad to brighten them if they look too grey or dull! Takes time but really works! I've had a lot of nickels to clean over the many years of detecting! Good Luck and Happy Detecting!!

God Bless!
