While on that page for the GT, click on the RCB text highlight to read about the Receive Coill Boost function. This is a small circuit in the coil that boosts the receive signal before noise is introduced, which is then amplified by the Sensitivity control on the control box. By boosting the signal before it travels up the coil cable it makes it more robust and avoids introducing noise picked up by the coil cable by the time it reaches the control box. Also, click above on the Success Stories to read some great GT stories.

If you had learned the Explorer you would be singing a different tune but obviously you didnt. Having an adjustable iron mask is key to locating targets mixed in with iron, any experienced Explorer or Etrac user will tell you that. The Sov has one iron mask setting, the Explorer/Etrac has many. Nothing against the Sov, I have two(GT and Elite), but those are for beach hunting.
All your telling everyone by these kind of posts is that you never learned your Explorers.
You should try another Explorer or Etrac, not just a hunt or two, but actually for a while, and post on those forums for advice and opinions, instead of constanting bad mouthing those detectors here, somehow trying to make the Sov more than it is. Anyone who comes here to read/participate should be entitled to correct information versus bias, or you always trying to convince yourself the Sov is the greatest. Its an excellent machine no doubt, but not more than what it is.
It is a slow recovery detector(GT). I took a G2 today to a site that Ive hunted many times with a GT, an Explorer SE and an Etrac and pulled out quite a few coins and pulltabs that I missed before. This is a small bay beach and the coins were surrounded by iron bits. The sand itself is an orangeish color because of the iron.
I will be interested in hearing how Elton fares with his Sov.

I have been out with it a couple of times. It's not an Se, or An Etrac for sure.. "BUT" it does pull coins 8 or 9" deep with ease.as I hit targets at that depth. In my opinion it is better with the 180 Meter than the Safari..having the Safari built in ID meter that was off and ID'd iron as good targets no matter how I set it up....That is what I was using prior to getting the GT.. Also used my F75 and T2 a lot. Different animals and no need to go in to those in this post.

This is a weak opinion on my part, as I do not have the experience yet to really form a solid opinion..it seems to work well eliminating iron targets..That I like. I hate digging iron even if it means finding masked coins as the SE and Etrac will do.... A personal thing !! I did not find any targets that had iron or pull tabs mixed in with the coin target. You explained that when you stated it just eliminates iron and no adjustment on how much. Sounds right to me.

I have the couple times I went out enjoyed the Sov GT... I feel it gets deeper than some machines, it does seem to hit on coins that are on edge and having the 17 frequencies opens up some finds that the higher frequency machines just plain miss.( Small Interseting items) The GT is a little hard at first to pinpoint with, and, I was way off thinking I was dead on.Hope experience changes that..I don't like digging that wide a hole to locate the target..and it looks bad too.

That's about all I can say at this time.. it's a good machine, it's not for everyone like all other detectors. It takes learning........ and the sounds are a bit annoying at times...I am looking forward to trying the 5" coil I picked up in a trashed park. I'll let you know how that went. I have not used the 10" Tornado coil yet.I was using a coinsearch 8" coil.

iv owned the Explorer and for me i see no diff in depth from the Elite or GT.....iv dug many coins 15" deep with both my Elite and GT...iv also dug not one but 2 Gold Rings that had a nail in the same hole! Iron Mask is great! just like cars,i think at times too many bell's and whistle's just get in the way.

Elton yes the Sov is plenty deep and also its rare to dig iron with it also. I really wish Minelab had improved it along with the Explorer, gave it an adjustable iron mask to match different hunting locations and also given it an overall wider disc range. Id also like to see the threshold return to a preset tone instead of sticking to the last targets tone(that is an option on the explorer I never use). I usually reset my threshold tone by waving my scoop over the coil, especially after a null or if Im trying to relocate a threshold change. no bother in pinpoint though.
The meter really helps out alot doesnt it. And the coinsearch coil is a great coil. youve got a good combo there.

Bling I agree with you, iron mask is great. the bells and whistles though, they can really help a detector and hunter. On the Sov Ive no use for a couple of features(bells and whistles) such as the noise band toggle, the silent search toggle, and the notch knob. how about replacing the notch knob with an adjustable iron mask with a dozen or so set points, and have one toggle like on the XS model, either your in disc or all metal.

To me the tones staying of the last target is a big plus for me and my bad hearing and one of the features of the Explorer XS and the EX II I didn't like. With the tone changing it is much easier to hear when you go over a target as not only the volume changes but the tone also which lets me know on the deeper and weaker signals it has seen something. With the Explorer some of the weaker signals was so faint it would see and report it, but was so fast and going back to the normal threshold it didn't give me time to hear it so I missed it.
I have had to use the band switch a few times in some area, but not real often , but nice to have if needed. The silent search to me is something I would use as i like that threshold but have seen where it could come in handy if you are in a area where targets are far and few as it seems like the threshold tone you hear most is that low tone of iron. I have used it a bit until I get to a area where I feel targets are not so far and few so I get my depth for the deeper ones. Notch is one I rarely ever use as i like to hear everything the Sovereign is seeing as that smooth pull tab reading could be the gold ring everyone is walking over thinking it is a pull tab. Gold ring seem to have a smoother signal than the pull tab that reads the same.

I just hope Minelab keeps making and improving the Sovereign for a while yet as those of us that have spent the time to get to know them really like them and do well with them.

I need one of those.. Keep the control box from getting all scratched on the bottom..
maybe I will find some coins next to iron with this machine after all.. That is how I read their ad..

I owned a Soveriegn once and sold it before I really took the time to learn it.

I really regret doing that now.

Well I found when using the larger 10" tornado coil it's a lot more weight to be swinging. You get more feedback from the ground ( Noise) and maybe not much more depth. ??? I didn't find any deeper targets at the same hunt sight. I did find more junk.

The pinpointing is a little easier with the 10" Tornado coil as you have a visual reference right down the center of the coil.. ( for me better than the round solid covered coil)

The target volume is much louder with the 10" Coil, and has to be turned down. So does the threshold..

I am not sure using the 10" coil for supposed max depth I will like the machine all that much. Maybe a nice 8" tornado coil will be the answer. Less weight less ground noise. And close to max depth capabilities.

One thing I did notice with the 10" coil several inch deep targets may read lower on the 180 meter. Some dimes I found hit at 178 and 179 not 180 like on the 8" Coinsearch coil. So I learned pretty fast dig all 174 to 180 targets, or you will miss some items that you may want to dig..

That is all I have at this point.. Now due to the added weight I have to decide if I am going to keep it or not having to use the heavier coil for more supposed depth. A couple hours isn't that pleasant swinging it..

Elton Ive found both Tornado coil sizes to be noisier than the 8" coinsearch coil. That 8" coinsearch is going to be about as smooth/quiet as a coil as you can get for the Sov. Weight wise the smaller Tornado has a nice light feel to it, but it still gets very good depth.
Ive always found the larger tornado to get a good couple inches over the coinsearch as well.
The Sunray S8 is a great coil for the Sov also, performance wise about the same as the coinsearch, and light also. If you cant locate a smaller tornado you might look into one of those.
Watch out, you can end up with a box full of coils in no time, theres so many available for the minelabs:goodnight:

Well guys my opinion is Of all the detectors I'v used I love the GT it's my machine of choice, hands down. Might I quote Forest Gump, "Thats all I have to say about that" Short but sweet hey guy's!:wiggle:

Hey Elton, I just acquired the 8 inch Tornado after using only the 10 inch for some time. I've only used it in my test garden, but think I'm really going to like it as it seems a perfect size and weight. Also, one thing I noticed right away is how easy it is to pinpoint right at the top of the coil. I agree with Treasurechic and hope yall keep us posted on your results. Good luck.

One of my stories is on the coin hunting section of The Sovereign GT.

It is titled Rare Find First Time Water Detecting
