minor battery issue

scott (wi)

New member
When I swung or jostled my 6 year old XS, it made periodic low tones (foil range) and I finally traced the problem to dirty battery contacts. So I cleaned them up and one week later it was back to making the same old noises. Cleaned up the contacts yesterday so they were as shiny as a silver dime, went out for a couple hours and the detector was rock steady stable but sure enough, the battery contacts are getting dirty again already. Is there anything I can do, other than keep cleaning these contacts?. Is there a way to get to the springs at the bottom of the battery compartment?

You can take a pencil with an eraser and tape it to a wood dowel or rod and use it to clean the spring contacts in the battery compartment. Also may want to use a little WD40 on them to prevent any new rust.

Thanks Jeff, I'll give that eraser a try. I'm also going to pop the battery out each time and see if I can go longer between cleanings. Tried it again and the battery held up well today - 3 wheaties were the only finds though.

Don't use the red eraser kind, they contain oil and are not that good. The white is better. I was advised By Minelab to use a butter Knife and just scrape the contacts clean to bright silver shine. Also make sure the steal plate is not loose in the bottom. That will make the machine shut off. Hope this helps.
