Monday's Belt Plate Finds

A

Anonymous

Detected a site Monday with some good finds. I found both these belt plates within 100 yds of each other along with several different style minies. The lead looks like a Volunteer Maine Militia (small size) plate. On the back is scratched "R. A " The bottom part of the "A" is cut off. The jury is still out on the "Florida" plate, but initial opinions don't think it's period.

Great finds! Here's a site I use to trace down units and soldiers. Hope it helps out with the initials.

Happy hunting

My buddy dug a plate the exact style of that florida plate ya got there. It came from a CW site down in Atlanta. It still had a piece of the leather attached to. I will try and get him to post a pic up for you later.
NICE FINDS!!!

Was found about 12 years ago in the confederate lines near the Chattahoochie in Atlanta. I also recovered the frame to a boot pistol about 75 yards away. It sure looks like the same Mfg. tho. Maybe this is the start of solving the mystery behind these plates.

OK, now I'm freaked out!! I've been hearing this plate ain't period. I had my doubts, but this gives me new hope!! What did your friend find out about it??

I'd sure like to find an old photo of a Civil War soldier with one of these plates on his belt!!

Nice VMM boxplate Paul. Sorry, but the Florida plate is not CW period. Those style plates began showing up around the 1960's. Letter style is not of the period and the attachment devices although similar to post war plates, it is not Civil War era. Consult Steve Mullinax's book on CS plates (and any other buckle book) and you won't find these listed. Congrats on the VMM, now that's a great find. Good hunting, David @ Dixie

It was shown in person to Steve Mullinax. I believe he said it was definately interesting but he would go neither way with it. I tend to believe it was a private purchased item, obviously from the same maker. But his was found in close proximity to a dated (1861) boot pistol. Gotta keep aan eye out for a pic with one in it or maybe a newspaper add for production of such. It definately brings hope to both sides though.
