Monte's Nail Board Test

all iron

Member
Hi Guys and Gals
I thought i would do a little test evaluation using Monte's Nail Board test set up ( which can be found on his site )

Tonight i"m testing my Omega 8000 with the 10 elliptical Stock 10 inch Coil
and the Delta with the 5 inch Round DD coil.

The set up is as close to the diagram shown on Monte's site using 1 quarter only
and here are the findings done indoors in my basement on a carpeted concrete floor.
All coins and nails or screws are on the same plane or depth

My sweep is approx 5 to 6 inches over the targets.

Delta results with the 5 inch coil:
Discrimination mode on rejecting Iron first:
5 inch coil easily found the quarter amongst the nails and screws even though it sounded off on the iron it definitely sounded off on the quarter also and was a signal that I'm sure i would have dug in the field.

I notched back in iron to listen to the response and was able to here the nails and quarter with no problem
Still a target i would have dug.

Omega with 10 inch elliptical coil test results
sensitivity at 60 due to EMI from the basement
all metal mode:: i may not have wanted to dig this target.
Discrimination at 20: quarter was coming through loud and clear even though the nails were peaking through a little... this was definitely a Target i would have dug
cranked up the discrimination to 56 and the quarter was all that i was hearing but i don't think i would ever run my discrimination that high just in fear of missing allot within the junk

Thanks for posting the test and results all iron. I have thought about doing that myself to test my Gamma and Pioneer 505 but time just seems to get away from me. However, I am confident, based on your results, that the Gamma would fare well. Thanks again!

Hello Monte. Your post here on the nail test leaves me with a few questions.
I am using a GB with the 5" coil right now.
I often dig every signal but have a few questions....
There are some signals that are Not the same. They tend to (at least to me ear seem to be more scratchy) and not as solid a signal. I have passed a couple of these because I get tired. When it is early and I have just started I dig everything. Many seem to be just junk if memory serves me correctly.
But just wondering if you have noticed these signals at times too? Then there is the larger junk items that I think are zinc die cast car parts often I think they fall in the low to mid 70's
But it is the scratchy signals that I am wondering if I should dig the most.. I often do not worry if the signlad has numbers that do not lock..

hey Ron can you take the G 2 test off? we need to keep it a secret how good it is

Jim coins i hunt are high 70's and there are other things that read high 70's like bottle tops larger can slaw and other copper round things and there is a difference in sound between the coin and junk only way i can put it is it sounds sweet and clean around the edges ! even when laying with junk like in the nail board test, numbers can pick up bits of the junk laying next to the coin, if i get a hint of that sound i can then investigate further from different angles and different sweep speeds even employ a Tesoro type wiggle that helps me heaps if i am unsure, if it is a coin it will pop out for me, the last thing i check is the numbers because i don't want to rely on them like night hunting or what ever the reason or if i am just looking at the scenery. the number will vary for me and don't lock at one number its the sound that i am after, like Monte said sound is the way to hunt, and granted each machine is different give me one i haven't used and i will struggle but will learn it quicker if am listening for the sounds.

i don't post up my finds because i don't want to be seen bragging its not good for me to do that !!

needless to say i hunt every day its not raining because its just so addictive and i love learning about the machine and how it works.

i may have taught myself backwards but, i disced up high 68 and now i can lower it in my junky spots if i want and the sounds are not so overwhelming.

i did like the way the 5 coil works from that vid might use it one day :clapping: bit to slow for me in a huge park, i like do do a quick survey of a site see if its been flogged or not then if it hasn't i can slow down and hunt but if it has i really struggle to stay around all day for a few coins .

anyway if i worked one thing out we all develop our own style and what works for me may not work for you or anyone else for that matter so i am sure no expert but i put in the hard yards and find my share of stuff and there are others who find more, its like tennis there is only one number 1 and it sure isn't me  but i am sure having fun playin the challenger circuit :look:

i am getting a vid camera late July will do a hunting vid that should be fun listening to my funny Aussie voice :lmfao:
