Motor-boating??? Anyone run into this on EX II ???

Ocean7

New member
last two times out with EX II with X-1 probe, 10.5" coil had this happen:
after about 2.5 hours the machine starts motor boating or just sounding off for no apparent reason like it's gone haywire. Battery reads about half charge.
turn off/on does no good. using non-rechargeable batteries.

This is not the sound I get when batteries are low or about to die.

Anyone have this happen - what was cause? Thanks!

SEEMS LIKE I HAVE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM ONLY WHEN THE COIL GETS WET AND OR HAS SAND BETWEEN THE COIL COVER AND THE COIL. ALSO HAD TO LET IT DRY OUT A DAY OR TWO BEFORE IT STOPPED FALSEING ALL OVER THE PLACE. NOT SAYING THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM BUT SOUNDS SIMILAR...GOOD LUCK...AND HH

Ocean I had this problem, the batteries had half-charge, etc. Let me guess, you switch to the probe, dig, and every 5-12 seconds a weird low sound can be heard as if it was from those old video games? Change the batteries, or recharge them, I did it and problem fixed, I don't know why. Hope it helps.

my rechargeable pack was worn out - i have to replace. So I'm just buying 24 pack Alkaline batteries till the season here really gets going. i thought maybe X-1 probe was going flukey on me.

If I don't resolve - I'll remove probe and see if that's causing problem. Then I'll replace coil with the new one Minelab gave me for coin of the month 2 years ago.

thanks for answering. HH!

Hi Ocean,

I have had my EX II for a little over twelve months, and I can't say I have experienced any problems with it as you have described above. I use the standard 1600 Mah AAs Ni-MH batteries that came with the detector and I have since purchased another set of 2300 Mah Ni-MH AAs and have had no trouble with either packs. The batteries just seem to go flat and give off the normal battery flat signal. I noticed on some of the posts that you can reset the EX XS by switching on and immediately removing the battery pack, this may help, however I am not sure if you can reset the EX II in this manner, maybe someone who knows might add to this thread.

Regards.....Boony
