Musket Balls

Finally after a six week wait we got some rain in southwest Virginia. It stopped raining around noon so I grabbed my detector and headed out for a short hunt. I hunted an area that I first suspected held a civil war training camp. However from the items that have been recovered I'm convinced we are hunting an old (late 1700 or early 1800 hundred) home site. On previous hunts my pardner and I have recovered a number of musket balls, a brass button, old brass house key and a 4" brass cannon. Today I recovered 6 additional musket balls. I photographed the ball with a caliper that shows the ball to be 12mm. I'm not sure what cal. this would be but I'm guessing 54 to 58 cal. HH TomB

well convert 12mm to tenths and hundreths of inches and you have the caliber. This could potentially tell you a lot more about the site as for instance .69 cal is the bore of the Brown Bess which would likely indicate a Brittish Revolutionary site.

Congrats on the very nice finds! I have never relic hunted but I really like seeing the old stuff, Beale.

12mm = .472"
Got a pic of the Brass cannon? Not Bronze? Are you talking 4" long "toy" or 4" projectile artillary? If you are talking about a full size cannon from the military you must check the serial numbers to see if the US considers it to be lost artillary. If it has been released then cool if not then not cool to get caught with. I think there can also be problems associated with owning artillary. Feel free to not answer any of these questions. Are they watching us?:look:

Very Cool, it would still be cool to find a full size artillery piece.
