Yes - provided the coins are shallower than 8 inches, the ground is clean, the coins are perfectly flat and in good condition.

Coins that are on edge, very deep, damaged, mixed with iron, or in bad ground will give off different readings.

Also, some targets read the same as nickels (some pull tabs) and quarters (can slaw, some bottle caps). I think the best thing is to leave the discrimination more open, and investigate all signals. But that's just me, I don't cherry-pick!
