MXT and "Car Horns"

Ok MXT dudes, i got a problem, maybe you guys can help resolve it.
I turn it on,,,,,set to factory presets,,,,ground balance,,,,,then set the threshold to a nice sweet hum....then go searching,,,,i pass over a buried piece of aluminum and WHAMMMMM !!!!!!! My headphones turn into car horns and turn my brain into silly putty.........

What am i doing wrong? Or what do i need to do before i lose what hearing i have left?

Are you using the stock White's headphones that came with your MXT? I have been told that they are notorious for being hard on your ears for this very reason. I think the better ones have higher ohm's and limiters built in to prevent this. I'm sure more experienced users can give a more technical explanation but that is what I was told by a reputable dealer.

Killer Bees, Gray Ghost, or Jimmy Sierra dura phones which I personally use. They are the exact same as the Gray Ghost, only a little cheaper and have blue ear cups instead of Gray. That may solve yer horn problems. Good luck

Yes, you need a set of good headphones like the ones already mentioned. Make sure they have a limiter built in or one you can turn on or off. I use Ratphones with single volume control and built in limiter. They work great and even though the overload hit is loud it doesn't bash your eardrums into your skull.

Ahhhhhh Haaaaaaaaaaaaa. Time to invest in some REAL HEADPHONES LOL.

I am surprised that the quality of the headphones doesn't match the quality of the detector? Or does it? Hmmmmm,
It's like buying a brand new Z06 Corvette and it came stock with retread tires....I'm gonna think about this a while,Not a good selling point.......is it?

I'll second the limiter switch proposal. I have a set of Killer B's that I have a limiter in. Didn't need it until I got the MXT, but boy did I need it once I started using the MXT.

Sounds like you're describing the signal when the coil is overloaded, too close to the target. Either turn down the phones you do have a bit or immediately raise the coil when that happens. Tells you the target is 1. very close to the surface or 2. large and a bit deeper, but still close. I like it when after lifting the coil I get a solid coin signal as it means there will be a very easy recovery. My two bits.

Well, I grabbed the phone and dialed the number on the whites site (which happened to be my district supplier Harrisburg,PA) and asked. They said they dont make them. So i Emailed whites (oregon i hope) and told them the situation and how come their R&D boys haven't made any yet??? those blue headphones work just fine on a Prizm, but will cause serious hearing damage if i continue to use them on my MXT. I will contact Sunray the day after payday.

(i wonder how many sets of headphones (with limiters) are sold each day? Whites is missing out on a few millions in revenue LOL).......

Accusounds by Detector pro, has the limiter built in.

Robert,I have the whites blue headphones which have vol controls on each side.

PROBLEM RESOLVED !! Backwoods Detectors is going to stock the Gray Ghost line of headphones mine just got ordered:clapping::cheers::bouncy::buds:

Again,THANK YOU ALL for helping me get a direction towards resolving a serious problem:thumbup:

I also want to thank everyone for the info. With my already poor hearing I need to take measures to protect what is left of it. Just ordered my Killer B's "Hornet" to replace the whites "car horns" that came with my MXT:biggrin:.

I ended up with the "Gray Ghost Ultimate" headphones.SCHWEEEEEEEEEETTT !! Very nice fit cord is relocated so it is close to your body. The cord is long enough so it doesnt get pulled away from your ear when swing your detector. The limiter works great.I am one happy camper:thumbup:
