My 6" 3kHz "Digger" Coil Review

The 6" Digger coil definitely has a place and I liked it for the most part. The only glitch that I found was it had a hard time hitting coins on edge. Not saying it won't but I have two merc.dimes that have been buried for two years. One at 5" the other at 6". I could never get the Digger coil to hit either one. The 5x10hf would hit both hard and accurate.

Now before the Calvary comes with guns drawn these are my findings only.

Was my coil defective? Don't know but I had posted my results before and have not had anyone comment either way.
Personally I think it has more to do with the lower freq.along with small size. The stock coil would also hit both coins but it was larger.

Just bought the 6" digger used first time tonight dug about 15 nails lol found kept getting tdi of 46 and it was old iron sensitivity was 24 is this to high do I need to drop it down a bit fist post on here great forum love my 705 was thinking of buying a ctx till reading all these posts now just going to buy a spare 705 for the heck of it lol hello to all

Slowing down is always the first thing to do when you start hitting too many 46's. Beyond that, avoiding a lot of assorted junk is in the audio and learning through trial and error what to listen for.
I wouldn't necessarily turn down the Sensitivity if the machine is otherwise running stable.

Thanks for you answer went out again slowed right down seem to get lot of 48 tdi seems unstable only had detector 6 months get out 3 times a week have done bits of detecting since young would not say am very experienced but no a bit just can't seem to get to grips with this Coil any help advise would he appreciated thanks

If you're getting hammered with -8 and 48 tid's, you might want to run in DISC mode rather than AM, and notch out those two segments.
If you get too many 46's, it's usually a matter of needing to slow down. And too many 48's generally means tons of iron that is wrapping around. I don't hunt with DISC very often, but sometimes I hit a site that is so peppered with old deep iron that I have little choice. The big thing then is to avoid unconsciously speeding up, and pay closer attention to the Threshold null.

I get pretty much what you'd expect for a 6" coil, but it does depend on soil conditions.
The real magic is in the audio response to high conductors as opposed to iron, and the separation capability of a 6" DD coil.

Any clearly repeatable high tone is worth digging if it's the right size and amplitude. If it sounds too loud it may be something like a flattened soda can, and sweeping over it while lifting the coil can often identify it as such, saving you the time of digging junk. Using Pinpoint Sizing to trace the outline of it is another method of determining whether it's big trash or something small enough to be of interest.

I'll say it was a successful hunt!!
What kind of depth are you getting with Digger?
I would estimate around 5 or 6 inches.
I'll probably end up getting one also. Kev :bouncy:

Hi Ricky. Notch out that junk. Sure, there is a slight chance that you might miss a few good targets.
But the trade off is worth it. Just think of all the time and effort you are wasting digging trash.
Just notch those nails etc. out. And try and find less trashy sites to hunt.
HH Kev

Just purchased {a clandestined coil not authorized by Minelab or discussed on this forum} 6" DD 3kHz and installed it on my 705. Would like to ask those that have achieved the coils optimum performance the settings that you have found to be satisfactory with the 705. GB setting is 26. Used it for a time this afternoon for testing & to get more familiar with it. Set it in coin (2) program. Area has a lot of trash items. So I was getting variable TID's. on the targets that looked promising. You guessed it all trash items. Interesting to note when I used the pinpointer over the target it would center it nicely with a stable ID in the trash arena which helped confirmed the target before digging. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to try it in a different area. Didn't realize this thread was started over 3 years ago, if I have it right? Thank you for starting this coil review and those that have contributed. Pete - USAF 62-66
