My first day with an SE

Hart-IN

New member
I didn't have a great hunt but not too bad for my first outing with a new machine. I did manage to find three wheats, 2 -1949's and 1-1951d from areas that I have previously hunted. One of the wheats was found on edge at 5", but that was the deepest thing I found today. If anyone cares to offer any setup advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Surprisingly, the weight wasn't much of an issue at all. I think I got more fatigued swinging my X-terra with the 10.5DD coil because it makes that detector a little front heavy off balance. With a small coil I should be able to swing this thing all day. Can't wait to get out again tomorrow !!

Good first with the SE. I've only had mine for a few weeks and haven't scratched the surface of what the machine will do. If you don't have Andy's book on the Explorer / E-Trac you should pick up a copy, it's a big help with several proven set ups from experienced users, like Bryce.

Nice job.

Many users of the Explorers hunt with the screen "opened up" with no disc. pattern other than some iron mask while in conductive tones with manual sens. around 22-25. You'll want your variability set high so you can distinguish the tones better. Gain is a personal preference but many people hunt with it around 8 which will give you some indication as to how deep the target is just by the audio feed back. Some prefer it jacked all the way up so they don't miss the deep coins though. Fast and Deep are another personal preference but just remember that Deep gives a more accurate analysis of the target and fast will give you a quicker recovery. Both have their places to be used; Fast in trashy areas and Deep in not so trashy areas. I prefer Deep on most of the time even in fairly trash places- you just have to swing a bit slower.

My settings: (Ex II)
Volume 10
Gain 8
Thresh Tone 1
Variability 10
Limits 10
Iron Mask -10 (on the SE that would be -22)
Fast off
Deep on
Sens Manual 23

If you want we could hunt together some time. Just let me know.

That is a successful first outing bud. Keep it up

Thanks everyone. I'm reading Andy's book now and one of the locals who has good luck with his explorer has offered to hunt with me to help out. I'm sure I'll be pulling old silver in no time.
