My first Saxon coin?

Chris Mac

New member
I think it may be a Saxon silver penny, although not 100% sure because it is covered in a thick hard crust on the back. The coin has a cross in the center and part of the text is visible (EVIL) Has anybody got any advice on cleaning? Not in fantastic condition, but not bad considering it may be 800 - 1000 years old. On the other hand it may be modern.

....great going Chris!!......well found mate!!

Gaz.

Thank you Gaz!!! I also found this strange, tiny object in the same place. It measures about 4 x 4 x 4 mm and has 2 dots on each large face and 1 dot on the smaller faces.

.....I'm no expert Chris but that maybe a roman or saxon type gambling or gaming dice I reckon.....

Gaz.

Thats fantastic Chris! cant find an exact match....the closest thing it resembles in my books is a king Eadberht coin (734-766) but dont quote me on that. Certainly looks Saxon.

The only cleaning I'd do would maybe put it in some olive oil for a week or 2, making sure that it doesn't have a negative reaction 1st!......and after that some really light brushing with a soft toothbrush.

That's some cool stuff.

It certainly doesn't look modern at all Chris. It's great to see old coins like this one.
Congrats on the find.

Such great finds, just amazing! Smithfire's on fire!

Knowing virtually nothing about the early middle ages, I looked up King Eadberht and his brother, Bishop Ecgberht. These sites were informative, thanks for introducing me to such an incredible period.

Thank you everybody for your kind comments and advice. I was using XT 705 with a 10.5 dd coil (7.5KH). One thing I have noticed with this combination is it can be surprisingly sensitive to small objects like those above.

Awesome coin but the ANCIENT 12 sided D&D die is OFF THE HOOK!!!!! ;) wish we had history like that here!!! Good on ya mate!!!

Just an update, these items have been identified by the local Archeology Finds Coordinator; The coin is a Saxon Styca about 840 A.D.(only 8 recorded of this type) and the other item is a Viking Polyhedral weight used to weigh gold and silver also around 840 A.D. and only 39 recorded.

Man !
that is ancient
and coooool
