My first silver dollar.

I did a lot of research on the area my buddy and I detected and it paid off well for me. Locating the old picnic area was quite a challenge as the area has really changed in over a hundred years. The old photos I had and going to the actual area was like night and day. The only real land marks we had to go by were the hills in the background and even then it was hard to tell if we were in the exact area the picnics were held over 100 years ago. We were only there for about an hour and I got a good solid signal and to my surprise and my buddy I dug my first silver dollar. It was a 1878 and in very good condition. The really ironic thing about it was the town close by to the area we hunted was founded in 1878, so my find was even more special to me. HH.

Thanks Joe. I have only been detecting for four years now and it just keeps getting better and better all the time. That dollar is my oldest coin so far and I agree that there has to be lots more out there just waiting to see the light of day again. HH.

Sure is pretty, love that BIG SILVER when it comes out of the ground.
Nice Job Eddie, looks like your walk paid off well for you. Bound to be some more sleepers waiting for you there. Pound it hard I say :)
H.H.

Thanks Mike and MJP and Jack as well. I like the big silver, but any kind of silver is fine with me. I also agree that there has to be some more sleepers out there. Our OPTH (Olympic Peninsula Treasure Hunters) club is having a hunt the 28th of this month at an old scout camp that we hunted last year. We pulled over sixty silver coins out of there last year in an area about an acre in size. This place has over 400 hundred acres and we haven't even put a dent in this place yet. I will keep you posted and get pictures after our hunt. HH to all.

Research is probably the most important part and if you find the right places and collect good stuff it will deffinately pay of. Just getting out and swinging a detector is a pleasure for me and finding a nice coin from time to time is icing on the cake. HH.

Eddie

Thanks Ray. Yours was nice also and I can't think of a better thrill than finding your first silver dollar and hopefully it won't be the last for either of us. HH.

Talk about find of the month for Jan. that has to be your club's find of the year. The detail is beautiful, do we get a look see on the reverse side? Congratulations on the research for the site. Now we look forward to the Seated and Barbers to follow.

Congrats on your find! This is the second one posted on the forum in the last two days. Maybe someone else (me??) will make it a hat trick over the weekend!

HH,

Jeff

Thanks Jeff. A hat trick would be neat and I wish you all the luck. I have only been detecting for four years now and my goals for 2006 are to find a large cent, a seated coin and the all elusive gold coin. Not much chance of finding any of these on the west coast, but as long as I able to swing a coil and a lot of luck nothing is impossible. HH.

Here is the back of my silver dollar. I don't have a camera that will take good close ups so I use my scanner for my pictures. Like I said, I did a lot of research on the area I got my dollar and this year I am going to get together with the property owner and try and pinpoint the actual picnic area more accurately I hope. Maybe then the seated and the barbers will see the light of day again.............. : ) HH.
