My hunting partner's find. Info?

My hunting partner Randy found this today at a Balldiamond that has produced a lot of nice Silver since we started working it since last year. It is a Foreign Coin the size of a Half Dollar and is Silver. I believe it is from Panama but does anybody know for sure and if possible, the value of this find? According to my World Book of Coins it is a 1/2 Balboa from Panama and in XF Condition about $45 or maybe $50, should pay for gas money.

Hi James,

As jb said it's defintely from the Republic of Panama. Notice the "Lev 0.900" on the back - I would imagine that is the purity of silver in the coin: 0.900 which I thought was sort of odd to find on a coin (looks more like something you'd see on a silver round - I wonder if it was ever in circulation or minted as a commemorative piece - maybe jb can tell us). Though I've never seen a coin from Panama before and don't know what a Balboa is/was worth. It's definitely a nice find though - how big is it?

It is the size of a U.S. Half Dollar. I thought for a second it was a Walker but then I noticed when I turned it over that it had a guy with a helmet on the front of the coin. I just wish I had found that coin because it would have looked great in my curio cabinet along with some of my other finds, but you can't get them all. Good Luck and HH.
