My longest hunt in 2009, thusfar. (Opinions requested, ConfCav et al.)

I have been out 19 times now in 2009. I managed 3.5 hours today and man am I sore. I went to one of my many clad sites. This place is also great for jewelry and silver coins but I concentrated on a football field today and scored mostly clad. Take a look at photo 2 with the wheat cent. See that tiny ring of metal? Its silver. You might see the stains my silver test left. It weighs .09 grams and contains a whopping 3 cents worth of silver. The GTI 2500 sounded off on it like it was a silver dollar. An amazing machine. Took me a few minutes to locate it with my Pro-Pointer. Should I log it as a silver find? Should I put it in my brag book? Should I do both? I am undecided and hope you will share your opinion. I ask for ConfCav's opinion, or anybody elses, about the 50 plus caliber miniball. Is it old? What era is it from? It is larger than .50 inches in diameter and it weighs 35.5 grams. It is almost solid lead as you should be able to see in the photo. There is a small flat spot on it which might be from my dig tool or it might be older damage. 128 coins for almost 13 bucks. Still no dollar coins or halves in 2009. I haven't found a War Nickel in almost 15,000 coins.

Only about 1607 from 20,000 lifetime coins with my Dynamic Garrett Duo, but who's counting?

Looks like a dropped lead .58 cal bullet to me; CW era is quite possible. They made them before, during, and after the war. How many lands and grooves does it have? Also, what does it look like inside the base? There are others on this forum that could possibly tell you the exact type/variety it is, but definitely old looking to me based on your pic and description. The flat spot on top could be from the mould or maybe the person who dropped it smoothed off the top. Don't see any marks indicating it was pulled from the barrel. What area/state did you find it in? If not a an area associated with the CW, you could be in a training area for troops/militia. Nice find.

Also, your iron looking items in the bottom right could be suspender clips of some sort, possibly also from the same area. I'd keep hunting wherever you're at; good chance there's other stuff in there from the same time period.

BTW, nice dinosaur.

The reason I took that photo at the odd angle was to try to get a view inside the base. It didn't turn out like I wanted. The base has a rim about 1/8 of an inch deep. Maybe these photos will help you out in helping me out. The mini-ball measures between 9/16-5/8 in diameter but is is lightly bent. .58 caliber makes sense.

I find those clips once in a while and I always assumed they were suspender or football equipment clips. I don't dig much iron and these ring up around copper cent. They don't give a very steady signal but usually within a notch of copper cent. I always assumed they were brass of some kind but these might have been painted black.

I live in NY. There was a lot of Revolutionary War activity here but no Civil War action. There were militia outfits recruited for the Civil War all over the place up here. I work at an American Legion and we have an old statue listing the battles local militia participated in and also deaths. Lots of them.

I find quite a few musket and mini-balls at this site. This one looks real old to me too. Glad we have a resident relic expert checking in here lately.

The dinosaur was buried with a handful of pennies. Some kid hiding his life's savings and favorite toy, perhaps.

nice finds there. you should be sore after 128 coins. on the ring, it is silver isn't it? log it. then brag about it. i would.

Nice day cwilk. like the dino.

Forgot, Ive got a 14 KT gold baby's baptismal ring about that size. That could be a baby's ring. Does it have any markings on it at all. Nifty find.

It's silver, I tested it. I think it was part of a chain. It wouldn't even fit on a newbornes finger.

You have my address (or you did) I 'll expect my doll in the mail!
