My New 705 Made It In Time For A Beach Vacation

Clad Daddy

New member
I upgraded from my X305 to a new X705 last week. I really enjoyed my 305 I bought second-hand in early spring. I wanted the more versatilty of the 705, so I took the plunge. The family went for a few days to Gulf Shores , Alabama. The gulf was beautiful and so was the white sand beach. The very clean, white sand beach. They are still mechanically deep cleaning the sand from the BP deal. Boy that creature sure does a good job.
My dreams of finding rings and jewelry buried all around would not come true this trip, but I had a blast. My son was home from college and comendered the 305 which led to a competition hunt. The first evening we arrived, I dug every signal to familiarize myself with the machine. 2,4 and 6 on the TID was always a piece of foil or the corner of a Crystal Light pack. 12 and 18 were mostly pull tabs. The occasional nickel would hold a solid signal. 34 to 36 to 40 bouncing would be a beer top. We cleaned out the chairs and tents behind our condo of all the trash.
After dark, we moved to the public beach by the moonlight (and the backlight on the 705, nice). I would give Gulf Shores a litter free award. You could go 50 yards without even hitting a piece of junk. It was amazing. When you did find a coin, there was usually more than one in the area. I was surpised at one spot the TID bounced between 12, 28, and30. Figuring a beer top, I scooped it up and was surprised to have a nickel, penny, and dime all three in the scoop.
We found some misc. stuff and covered a lot of real estate. The pictures show our haul. We went one more time after the pictures were made. 196 clad coins for a little over $12.
I tried the wet sand out of curiosity of things I saw posted here. My detector falsed -2 and 2. I turned the sensitivity down and it stopped but, there was nothing to be found, not even a pull tab. The only exception was around a bridge piling where people fish. I found three different dimes that were 6-8" deep in the wet sand.
No tangible riches, but a lot of fun and some precious family memories were made.

You all did well. How bout that 10x5...like it?what was your GB?I get a 27 to 30,never hunt in beach mode or with tracking on.Those big twist offs can sound like a quarter at first but a few wiggle passes give them away with there jumpiness, nickles are a 12/14,the only time a tab gets me is if its a little deep or is broken in half, plus zeroing in on them with the ML wiggle you get that rapid beep,beep,beep.....but, I got a small 10k on the surface that sounded the same.I find the low TIDs given by foil pieces are a weak and most of the time lack a good repeatable tone.Always check cigarette packs and boxes,4/6 TID from the foil, but I got a 10 dollar bill, lighter and a funny looking cigarette from one a few days ago that was a 32 tid.
Who got the better in the 705 vs 305?

Good thing you found that knife! You might have saved someone from having a really bad vacation experience.

Thanks Bob. Best I can remember, the GB autoed in the low 50's. I have had the stock 9" concentric MF and the 6"DD HF on my 305. I like the eliptcal coil. Quarters ring like a bell. It does not seem to pinpoint in dirt quite as accurately as the round coils. I found some cigarette packs but didin't think about looking inside. Good tip! Also found 3 electronic cigarettes. My son used the 9" concentric on the 305 and I have to say it held its own with the 705. I found a lot more quarters which may have been a coincedence. The exuburance of youth kept him moving after we found a coin. I would often keep going over the spot and pick up some more.after he moved on.

Nice finds! I enjoy my 705 on the beach when I get the opportunity. (10x5 coil also)

Gotta ask Bob OZ- why don't you use the beach Mode?

I'm selective with my tracking-I like it most when there is space between targets.

GT...I only hunt the dry sand at the beach. I treat the 705 like a turn on and go machine when beach hunting, auto GB,AM,sens 20,4 tone...swing and dig. It's what works for me!

Bob-Thanks for the answer. Got some black sand in the mid atlantic beaches. I do venture onto moist sand.
Beach Mode-GB (auto & tracking as described) AM,NC sens-19-27 . Sometimes I cross check a signal with Disc 2. I dig all signals on the beach though. Still learning.

Wow that was a lot of scooping. Congratulations on all the finds.

I too have searched the public beaches at Gulf Shores and you're right, they are very clean. I've not found a lot while hunting there, but have had fun looking. Cleaned up some trash and found a few coins. It's always fun to get out and beaches are a real challenge to a Midwest guy and his 705.
