My oldest U.S. Coin to Date

Well, while on my little vacation, I came across some road construction. I followed the trail of dirt to the spot they were dumping the soil they dug from the construction site. There was a large pile of dirt there, and I could see tons of broken bottles, bricks, some pipe fragments, and TONS...I mean TONS of iron. I scanned the pile for about an hour...and was about to leave as I was getting tired of the iron and wasn't finding much of anything. Then I pulled this beauty from about 4" from under a brick. I can't believe the condition it is in!! My oldest U.S. Large Cent by 6 years...and my oldest U.S. coin thus far. Thanks for looking!

Nice find Wess,

I've done the same... Followed trucks to the dump site but it usually is in big piles and filled with junk. Pretty much can only pull the top coins off the heap. Sure wonder what is buried underneath. I'd like to try do some research and try find where they hauled dirt in the old days when they first started paving streets.

HUGE piles of dirt...and sadly they are loaded with iron. Unfortunately less than 1% of the pile is reachable with the detector. Wish I could screen the stuff *hah* I'm sure there are tons of coins in there. Yes, that would be one heck of a site if you could find that backfill from the original roads!! If you do, call me, I'll be your detecting partner that day *LOL*
