My relic hunting adventure....come on along for the trip :D

<center>

Well, I got an early start on Wednesday and made the 10+ hr trip to Virginia. After spending the night I got up early and made my way to the Cross residence just a few miles away. Let me tell you folks that Vernon has a beautiful place and you can just about see the Civil War troops passing by his home. Vernon welcomed me when I drove up and then introduced me to the 5 beautiful ladies of the house. I can tell you those girls love their Daddy :thumbup: Sharon had breakfast ready after Vernon had shown me just a small portion of his awesome CW finds. That CW wall of his has just about anything you would ever want to dig. I also got to see some of his daughters works close up and can tell you those girls have some natural talent....they even admitted they got their talent from Cooter ;) After we finished eating we headed out to one of his hunting spots. This is the kind of place I'd love to be able to hunt everyday :thumbup:

Here's a picture of Bubba and Cooter together :D in front of the CW wall

We hit the field and of course Vernon started digging goodies right off the bat :thumbup:

After awhile I finally got a nice hit and dug this sword hanger :super:

I wasn't the only one to draw a crowd while hunting :D

Before long (seemed like 10 minutes) it was time for me to head out to Culpepper but not before I made some very nice finds with 5 bullets, knap sack hook, a cuff button and a couple of primer caps and got to meet someone I've wanted to meet for a long time. I really appreciate the hospitality that Vernon, Sharon, and the girls showed me and I had a great time detecting Vernon and hope to do it again :thumbup: If ya ever get down this way I can probably put you on some spot where you can find a Merc or a Wheatie ;) :lol: Its always special when you can meet someone on the forum and hunt with them.

Hunting in Culpepper was fun and tough :surrender: and at first it reminded me a little of the place Vernon took me.....instead of cattle it was people

There were around 350 folks hunting. The soil was HOT :hot: and at first I thought my new detector was going to be a waste of money but by the end of the first day I was getting the hang of it :thumbup: There was 1100 acres and although very big there was always folks detecting close by but I made the best of it that I could. The first day I dug what I was told is a Confederate rosette and a few dropped bullets including a Confederate Gardner bullet :thumbup: I also dug about 50 fired bullets but didn't keep them unless I could at least tell what they had been :shrug: On day 2 my hunting buddies and I hit a hill that everyone was calling button hill. We were all using the new TDI and I can tell you that we were digging targets that others missed. I dug a coat button at about 9 in. in a hole someone else had dug a target at about 3 in. In all that day I dug 7 buttons...but several were rotten and were just backs...talk about disappointed :cry: One of the small cuff size buttons was also IDed as Confederate. All in all I had a great time :super:

Here's my hunting buddies Doc Watson and Keith Zorger....minus Ed :cry: This spring Ed :thumbup:

Here's the good buttons that I dug including the one with Vernon :D

Here's everything I dug for the 3 days I hunted except for the 100 nails, scrap and 50 lbs of melted lead.

Craig, you did a great job with the post and the pictures, that's the best thing about this forum and it's long time members, when we do finally meet it's like we have always known each other and your great post proved it once again :clapping:

I'm glad you got to hang with Vernon and Doc Watson and Keith Zorger, all great people :thumbup:, nice finds Craig, now you know how to set up that machine and will kick some butt with it, I wish that old Eddie could've made it but he is doing what he needs to do for the next hunt.

Thanks for the great post and pictures bubba, with any luck I'll be heading for Mass next fall and your post just fed my apatite, thanks :clapping:
