My Silver "Someday" finally arrives.

Another subject title could read "How the 705/Digger combo makes it hard to sleep at night!" Just kidding. Awhile back I had asked a friend if I could MD on his ranch which was started around the 1880s he said sure and I told him I would split anything that I find, ( recall these words for later on!) This ranch at one time was also owned by an early relative of my wife's. This last Wed. I headed out to his place after work, and after he gave me a brief tour, I settled on a small grass area next to the old cook house that was used to feed the ranch hands. I set up the 705 with a pattern 4 with no discrimination, auto GB at 12, and Sensitivity at 25. Within 5 min I dug a 1960 clad nickel and a chrome valve stem cap, this didn't look promising, Another 20 feet of iron everywhere, when I got a mix of good 16,36-40,42 TIDs and 46, 48, -8 and -6s. After removing a 4in plug and some more dirt down to about 5-6 in, I used my ML Pro Find 25 and located a target right away, a Barber dime, my first old silver! I had found a few silver rosies and a V nickel but nothing like this one. I checked the hole to make sure I had everything, when I had another hit with the Pro Find, this time a V nickel, I was thrilled ! But wait ......! another check and another hit, another Barber dime, more hits. and a larger hole, I call it my Barber Hole, I know Mark, ...they're V nickels! I have always read others posts and thought, someday I hope I can find a hole like that. It finally arrived. My first time on this location and 45 min into my hunt. 2 Large nails were trying to hide these as you can see in the pics. The larger coin is a very worn Canadian Mature Head quarter with no date on the back, and the other dime is a very worn barber. The Vs look good though the outer layer of being in the ground makes some dates and details hard to read. The Vs don't appear to be key dates, I know everyone says don't clean them, but is there a way to clean the Vs to enjoy them more, I have only washed them with water, or should I just enjoy them as they came out of the ground? Was this a pocket spill or a cache?, I thought to myself. A clue might be on the lower right V nickel. There appears to be a small patch of fabric still stuck to the coin, a fine woven fabric. The one thing I thought it could be was an old small tobacco bag with a draw string?? Back to the words I spoke earlier about splitting what ever I found. AAAHHHH ! I know it would be nice to keep these together, but our words need to mean something these days. I had the thrill of the dig, I have the photos and the memories (and my half), friendship with the owner, and the opportunity to continue the MDing on this property. I'm thinking on mounting his coins in a frame with the pics for him. " A good name is better than great riches" is what I hold to. We don't do this for the $$$. Never stop dreaming and keep those swings slow ! Mark

Ha! One of those days that we all dream of! Congratulations Mark!!

WOW, what a find, a big Congrat's

That's cool that you split it with the guy...... I do not know what I would of done, lol

Man, you had a great day of finds!!!!
Those dimes look to be in good condition too.. many times they are very worn and most of the details are gone.
Congradulations on some great finds and keep us posted on future hunts there!!

Thanks Longhair, I hope it happens again, if not, I had the thrill this one time.

Thanks Mark, I've only searched that one small area of this ranch. Hopefully the gift of gratitude will continue with success.

Thanks FW, Yes they are in pretty good condition. The 1899,1901,1905 ( no mints) and 1907s are the keepers, LIBERTY is clear on these 4. Hopefully I will hit some more great finds at this location.

Wow!! That's a fine bunch of silver. You have a very productive area to spend some more time on, I hope. Big pat on the back for keeping your agreement with the land owner:clapping:

Nice finds! This is what it's all about.

You beat all of my V nickel finds last year by two, in one hole! Actually I was lucky last year and found my four and only V nickels in the same month at 3 different sites.

I'll leave it up to you but I use a fine brass brush on my rough looking copper coins and you would be surprised how well they turn out. I just buy the cheap $0.99 brass brushes at Harbor Freight and put some Dawn on them and lightly scrub. I'll rinse them and do it some more if necessary. I've only had a one instance where this may not have been a good idea but have done it on a few handfuls of coins over the years....never on silver.

I always say that if this was golf that coil would not be allowed in regulation play. You may be surprised what else is at that site.

Thanks Bob, Mapper, and Jack B, it really was a fun day. An update on the V nickels, my eyes deceived me on the first check of dates. One I thought was an 1896 turns out to be an 1886 ! I guess I need to make a trip to our reputable coin shop and see if it possible to reveal a grade for it.

WOW, a 1886 V. What ever you do, DO NOT clean that with a brass brush.

I found a 1886 a few years ago and I put a bad scratch on the back so mine is pretty much worthless, but at least I found one.

" it could be was an old small tobacco bag with a draw string??"

Mark, that could very well be, Bull Durham first came about in 1850 and was around until 1980's. When I was a kid on a small ranch in Wyoming, I used to carry my money in a Durham tobacco bag that my grandfather gave to me, brings back fond memories. You've got some great finds, thanks for sharing. HH

Speaking of friends and property,
Was standing in the driveway of a friends 160 - 180 yr old house. Had the little bounty hunter discovery 1100 back then. Talking about mding I said you see those largest trees, people sat in the shade there probably forever. He says, You have the detector in the SUV, yep! So we pull it out, walk to the biggest tree, 10 minutes later and 3rd hit we're looking into the hole at a shiny 1907 Barber half. It had a deep dent from an obvious 22 cal bullet. It wasn't worn much so we figure it may have been 7 - 10 yrs old when lost.
Id told him a couple times we'd split anything of value. He kept holding it so I repeated the deal. "Oh yeah" he says. So being nice I say " Well actually law states its your property so its all yours by law. Quickly he then says "Ok" and shoved the sweet barber deep into his pocket.
He actualy keeps asking when Id come back and detect his entire 1.5 acres. Especially now with my 705. I nicely explained to him the 1000 plus I've got into mding and how we strive to pay for our hobby. I offer to let him run the bh 1100 and I'll run the 705 with digger coil, we'll clean up I assured. Not a response. Good to have friends.

Very nice finds! The barbers are on my bucket list!
