My Thursday coin finds

Hi, despite the rain, man gaged to get out to a local park, the park is around a hundred years old if not older, i don't think it has been MD before if it has they didn't take much, most of the coins you can see where spills, the silver half crown was sandwiched between three pennies, i found another few spills on a hill, probably where people have rolled down, not found any jewelry yet but its got to be out there. Also found harmonica reeds and a battered sixpence (not shown) and the top of i don't know what but thought the name was quite good (Pratt's). believe it or not i didn't find one pull tab, only found one coke can and that was four inches down. the park has a good history and i have only covered a tiny little bit of it, i think it is only used for dog walking, but it is well kept. as i get to go out more to it i will post more finds maybe some jewelry. (i hope)

Hi, i live in the UK, Liverpool to be exact, the one coin i didn't mention is the one under the half crown, it is a gold coloured 2 franc piece, dated 1922, found on my next sweep, just by the crown, can't wait to get back but weather at the moment is awful.
 
... That explains much about your finds. Im wondering, are there a lot of detectorists in the UK who detect in parks and such? I always imagine Brit hobbyists out in some farmers field.
What does the local council or constabulary have to say about your hobby?
 
This is one of the best vacations for detecting a number of people from Canada & the USA go on these trips regularly. Dan

hi, only ever been stopped once in a park, and that was because a kind person told the gardener i was digging big holes all over the park, once he went i just carried on, he was only doing his job, never really been bothered by police or any one to be honest, i carry a copy of the local park bye laws in my pocket just in case, and they do not state that you are not allowed to metal detect in any of the parks. i have been asked to cease detecting on a beach once because unknown to me it was national trust land, and once on another beach as the part i was mding was a nature reserve, no probs first warden gave me a phone no. to see if i could get a licence to MD in that area, and the other pointed in the direction i could MD, if your pleasant to them they are so back.

sorry, to answer your original question, i haven't seen many directorates in the parks, i have had a few people come up to me and ask if i have found much and that they used to detect and come out with all sorts of stories about hidden treasures in the local parks that have never been found etc. no doubt i will have some one come up to me and ask me to leave or something like that.
 
Welcome to the forum and thanks for the info. I've wanted to go to England for a long time on an MD'ing tour. I understand though that they have tightened up the treasure trove laws somewhat recently since MD'ing became legal.

l it is true that the Brits are some of the most polite folk that ever walked.
Here, I usually get some officious pompous buffoon who thinks it's his personal landscape and so must job to harass anyone he sees.
I should think that many of the English parks and such might be still good hunting. Most of the efforts in the UK have been geared toward Roman and somewhat later periods out in the countryside... is that so?
 
i like to think we are a polite breed of people, but as every where you will always get a jobs worth who will always put there job or position before being polite or even reasonable, as yet i have to come across one of those, the gardener i en counted was only acting on a complaint by a member of the public who thought it was his own personal Park for him to walk his dog, which by the way snarled a my daughter, probably got that of its owner, i think at times we can b to polite for our own good, eg some bumps into me and i say sorry :shrug: .UK parks are great to hunt, so easy to find the history about them, i traced one park all the way back to when it started for a project i was doing at college the amount of finds are unbelievable the amount of jewelry out there must be incredible, but sadly i haven't found any yet except for junk, its just finding the right spot but one day :yikes:
