My XLT goes crazy (false signals)

Hi, I'm very sad and worried 'cause my White's XLT seems to go crazy.

I've been using it for 5-6 years: nice machine, even if I don't get those depths many other users claim.

Anyway, starting from a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a strange behaviour of the instrument: it starts working as usual, then, after a while, maybe 15-20 minutes, I start getting false signals, beeps and jumping numbers, even stopping coil motion, EVEN POINTING IT TO THE SKY!
Usually, you can get this kind of behaviour working on salt water or near (big) electrical lines. But this is not my situation. I made tests in different places, many of them already tested with standard settings: the problem is the same.
No matter if I re-balance or change program (I always search in DISC mode) or whatelse: the only way to get out of this mess is to turn-off an on the machine.

What's the problem? Is my baby gone?

Thanks for help

have one...when my dfx went insane in January it needed to be recalibrated...but if you can start with a different coil. You may have a broken wire in the coil cable.

That's a good idea.

I have a BIGFOOT coil and a MAXIMA 15" coil; I'm going make some tests with them, just to understand if problem is in the coil/wire or in the CPU.

I'll let you know.

Greg speaks wisely While on drop the battery compartment door open.Let battery slide out Leave for about 2 minutes and repalce and fire up again.
Another thought..have you cleaned out coil cover..If not do so..lastly you may have coil problems as Greg stated. Try a different coil if you have one..

I had already tried the "take out the battery while MD on" but it solved just for a while.

Yesterday I checked the wire: it seems OK, at first look it's not bended or damaged.

One strange fact: I DISCONNECTED the coil and started up the MD with NO COIL. I supposed it had to be completely silent, and in fact it was. But, when I (gently) hit the box with my hand I got beeps and changing VDI numbers. Is it normal?

One more fact: I reconnected the coil and I used the MD until it went "insane" (false signals). At this point I DISCONNECTED the coil: hitting the box caused MANY MORES BEEPS and SIGNALS.

It seems like the box had been leaded to INSANITY (or INSTABILITY) STATUS, recoverable only by turning-off.

Is the bad coil that leads the box to insanity, or the box itself that's insane?

I'm going to test on thursday on a roman site clear from trash I hunted many times and I'm sure it's OK. I'll bring my other two coils and I'll test them.
I'll let you know.
Anyway I contacted assistence (they say maybe everything, the coil, the wire, the box...) and I'm ready to send my baby to hospital.

Was thinking... Is this with headphones attached, or just the external speaker.
I had a Eagle II SL and it did that once..Found a wire broken or loose on the headphone jack..Fixed it and all was fine.
It was just loose enough it was touching the ground side and cutting in and out on me.

I have the same problem occasionally with my DFX. I'm normally using the beach and jewelry mode, even when detecting in the woods. When This happens, I switch to the coin mode, and after awhile, switch back to the previous mode, and the erratic signals are gone. Works for me Hope it willl for you.

It's not an audio, speaker or headphone problem: I get also jumping numbers on the display.

I usually search in RELIC mode with some additional tunings.
Switching to COIN mode like suggested by mrowdy seems to fix erratic signals, but not for a long time; after 15-20 minutes or less erratic signals start again.
Have to say that once I had no need to use tricks like this, 'cause my XLT was fine.
I'm sure there's something wrong...
I'm not sure I'll be able to make tests tomorrow: here in Italy weather is VEEERY BAD!

I'm going to send it to assistance on monday.
I'll let you know what happens. Hope it will help somebody.

In the meanwhile any other idea will be appreciated...

I will be very interested to find out what is causing it to do that . My brother and I bought a used Eagle II last year and after about 2 hrs of continuos hunting it does the same thing as your XLT. I got tired of it and just gave it to him, but we never figured out why it does it either, I would have to shut it off for about 5 minutes , then it would work for about 15 minutes and start going beserk again??? He doesn't use the machine , so Im thinking of getting it back , thats why I;m curious, Let us know when you figure it out..Thanks ..Rich

Hi LaDigger,

I'm going to perform a last test on saturday/sunday and send it to assistance on monday.

I'll let you know.

My XLT is fine!

Yesterday I went to the field for a last test before sending it to assistance.
I used it for about 3 hours and I can tell my XLT is fine now: no false signals or jumping numbers, even rising-up preamp gain.

I didn't do anything. I opened the box for checking for oxidation. Everything was OK, so I closed it again without doing anything.
I left it without battery for a couple of days, and recharged battery. That's all.

It seems to be no explanation to what happened. I just hope it will not happen again.

Yesterday test was veeery OK (see my other post).

Maybe it was damp inside and it dried out.............

Glad to hear it worked. I bought the Eagle II back from my brother yesterday. He told me he found some battery crud on one of the springs in the alkaline battery box, and cleaned it. I used it for about 2.5 hours this morning and it did not act up once.I remember when it acted up before ,all the icons would flicker on and off very erratically and the machine would chatter. Maybe it was loosing contact with the battery when the voltage started to fall , and have erratic power surges? Anyway it worked ok today in a TOT LOT I hunted.I got 72 clad coins and junk rings, and other typical stuff, showed the trash just to show how sensitive this thing is, rusty pins and small foil. Ran accept -19 to +95, disc off, relic mode. It worked good today....HH......Rich
