NASA: 'Sun is waking up from a deep slumber'; Warns solar storms may wreak havoc on power grids, GPS, air travel, radio communications...

[size=large]A word to the wise ~ Prepare Now... Not when the supermarkets are stripped bare. You will be able to sell a candle for $10.00 * an oil lamp for a $100.00 You don't know what dark is until there's no light, no water and nothing works. Most people are hard pressed to come up with a weeks worth of decent food without a store to replenish. Sure, it might not happen... then again, it might. Katrina proved that the government can't help you and if you don't take the necessary steps for your own well being... then just join the rest of the sheep down at the local astro dome when the manure it's the fan ~ good luck wit dat!.

[size=large]They are lightweight and the entrees are pretty good if it's something you like. Plus they can be self cooked just by adding water to a chemical bag which generates heat. The drawback is they're expensive, bordering on outrageous. We have decided it would probably be best if we continued to eat the food we normally eat during emergency situations. Most canned foods have a shelf life of a year or more, and can be rotated out by consumption as expiration dates near. We figure this way we wouldn't be wasting money by buying exotic "survival" foods we would "only" eat during emergencies. Anyway, that's what we decided to do. Pasta, cereal, beans, rice, can all be stored and rotated. We even got wheat berry and grinders, both electric and hand. Wheat will last for a LONG time if stored in a cool place; the wheat discovered in King Tut's tomb was sproutable. I would suggest you stock up food that you like.... powdered beer?

I read this for grins when I was researching my war college paper. It gets cheesy in the few places where it tries to wrap a love story into the mix :puke:, but otherwise, it's a very interesting novel nevertheless.

Talks about the cascading effects on population centers of a major geomagnetic storm...how successful segments of the population abandon the cities and establish camps...kind of hit the reset button on civilization. The Amish are elevated to the cream of society since they know how to plant, etc. It's published by a Christian publisher, so it touts the virtues Judeo-Christian society as the model of success, but it's done in a non-overbearing fashion. I found it at a Rhode Island public library...well worth a look.

From a Ham Radio Enthusiast point of view it comes as good news as it means that worldwide communications will begin picking up once again. Makes me want to dust off my antennas and radios and get ready for it. From a practical point of view, this latest cycle (cycle 24) is not predicted to be as active as cycle 23 was.

Either way it is a normal 11 year cycle that has turned the corner of its cycle of minimum activity and will begin increasing its activity over the next few years.

But the comment "solar storms may wreak havoc on power grids." lends one to believe that this next cycle will be worse than those of the past. Based on predicts of cycle 24 that is not the case. No one can predict a solar flair and I'm sure you would agree with that. So based on the predictions of the upcoming cycle, which I base my comments on, cycle 24 no more worse than many that have come before it. In fact, it will be weaker than the last one.
