Need a 5 incher...SunRay or Kellyco?

I got the SR 5"er, and I love the little thing. Never bought anything from K-co, so I can't give input on their products. SR X-5 has been deadly in the trash I sometimes hunt. Maybe someone else has actually compared the two brands side by side.

Go with sunray,I had a kellyco and did not like it at all.I tried a buddy's sunray and know amgetting one.HH,Tom

i would say they are different. I wouldnt say one was obviously better in terms of performance because as I said, they are different. Subjectively, I'd say the Sunray had a wider and bigger footprint while the excellerator had a narrower and a bit deeper one. The Sunray is tops when it come to looks.
I have no personal experience with K Co. But due to the numerous customer horror stories, I keep away from them. can you say long range treasure detectors?
On the other hand, I would personally vouch for Sunray customer service and quality. A great company.

perfer the SunRay X-5, The X-5 operates great in the wet ocean sand when doing beach pits or under harsh weather. The Kellco special seemed to false couldn't get peek performance as I could with the X-5.
Hands down the Sunray X-5 is the better coil, As Bing said SunRay is the best.

I think Coiltek makes a 5 incher which in my opinion is superior to all other brands if used for Minelab products (simply because they also make all the coils for Minelab and they surely have an insight to the specs of the brand).

So you're saying Coiltek makes the Explorer 10.5" Stock coil?
I don't believe they offer a 5".

I heard that Coiltek used to make all of Minelabs coils in the old days but that Minelab makes their own now.

Coiltek is an Australian company (like Minelab) and from what I remember 2 years ago before I left Australia, they were still making all of Minelabs coils, but maybe things have changed since...
I called them once and asked them to make me an eliptical 12 inch coil for my old XT16000 and they had given me a quote, but I never went ahead with the order cause I got rid of my XT and bought an Explorer.
Im sure they make 5 inchers and smaller (on order), but youre gonna have to ask them for price before you decide and im sure ive seen a 5 incher from minelab.
Coiltek is however simply the best coil making company for Minelab products (the WOT proves it)and all reports from the various forums show that Sunrays and Kellycos arnt as good for Minelab (but very good for Garrett, C-scope and Whites).
Last , but not least, I have with my new ExpII the 8 inch coil from Minelab and it is very good...it can pic the smallest of grains and yet still be super sensitive at a very good depth (almost as good as the 10.5 incher).
cheers

I was also looking at a 5". Has anyone tried the 5" EXcelerator coil from KellyCO?

The Minelab user's in Europe swear by the Detech coils which are the same the EXcellerator coils sold here in the U.S. by Kellyco. They are made in Bulgaria for both markets.
If you check out the European forums such as Minelabowners.com, many of the users are doing extremely well with the Detech coils - both smaller and larger than the stock coil. In penning the Quattro book, I was in touch with several hunters and dealers overseas and they use & sell a good number of these coils in addition to Coiltek. Sun Ray also has a following; however, the fact that less people use Sun Ray coils over there may have to do with the exchange rate and the corresponding price they cost.
I'm sure the ideal setup would be to own one of each coil from Detech / Kellyco, Sun Ray, Coiltek and Minelab; however, not sure if I could justify paying more for coils that the detector itself.
Hope this helps . . .
Andy

Ray I have used both 5" coils. I used a 5" Excel. on my MXT and it worked great, and cost less then Sunray. Used 5" Sunray on Sov. also worked great, don't think you can go wrong with either one. Picked up to used Sunray coils 5"& 8" for my Quattro and they work great. So it is a matter of chose or what deal comes your way.
