Need a new detector.. any recommendations?

I currently use a Bounty Hunter Sharpshooter II and it has been doing a good job for me, but I'm wanting something a little better. I'm a newb, only 2-3 months behind me and I'm really only interested in finding coins at this point. I've been looking at Whites, Garrett, and Tesoro. I would like a detector that will pick up coins at 12" or so. Any suggestions on a Tesoro model?

I like the Vaquero and Tejon! Excellent depth and great discrimination. I've got a V forsale in the classifieds ;)

12" deep on coins is a pretty big order, EZ.
Don't mind saying, I never found one that deep.
(Well, except at the beach.)

Seems like you might want to get a Tesoro Tejon.

How deep are you finding coins with the BH sharpshooter II ?

I have a Silver U-Max and like it but I am looking at picking up a Vaquero. I think with the ground balance will be able to get a little more depth than the silver U Max. Good luck getting 12 inches with any detector. I have a buddy that has reached the 10-12 inch range with his DFX whites. That is supertuned manually, not preset programs. Happy hunting!

I'm generally finding coins at 4-6 inches deep, but since I'm upgrading, I would like to have one that would detect deeper so I can go over the spots I've already searched (maybe there are some older coins deeper in the ground that I'm overlooking?). I hunt with a friend that uses a Garrett Ace 250 and he puts me to shame on the number of coins he finds. Maybe I should buy one like his.. Thanks for the input. EZ.

I have had both a Ace 250 and a Silver uMax, and in "my" ground the Silver will put the Ace to shame (easily). Steve.

I've only got one BH, EZ, and haven't tried your model, but I recently swapped off my very new Ace 250 for another old Tesoro.

The Little Yeller Feller was a nice, liteweight machine, with a computer and display, and was fun to use.
I didn't feel it was a particularly deep machine.
Recovery time, between multiple targets in a sweep was slower than Tesoro.
I didn't care for that. And I didn't like the bongy bell! It drove me nuts!!!

So I swapped it off while it was still nice and pretty and clean.
The fellow who got it is happy, and also doing well.

In the last three weeks or so since I've been using the new-to-me SS uMax I've found 3 Au rings and a Ti cross, today.
The Little Yeller Feller had a notch and modes... I could notch out foil, tabs and pennies and sweep across the turf digging only quarters and dimes by the handful down to about 4-5"... if that's what you're looking for...

I've heard reports of targets at 8", but the best I ever did was maybe 6".

For a 12" model, you'll need either a Tejon or Lobo ST. Personally, I'd recommend you move up to a Cibola first. Turn on and go with simple learning curve. One of my friends dug the Spanish dollar posted in our relic gallery at 11" with two large square nails on it...in VA soil.
Good hunting,

Im in the same boat with the Quick draw. I want to seriously upgrade and what I have been hearing/researching that the Whites Matrix M6 and MXT are both awesome with great depth. I will probably choose one of those.

I've got an F2 and for the price you can't beat it IMO! Decent depth, extra 4" coil and shaft for trashy areas, and you can get the 10" coil for around $40 which will get you just about as deep as any model costing up to 3 times more.

"In my ground" the F2 just couldn't pull any depth. Couldn't hit a quarter at 4'' in my test garden. So if you have highly mineralized dirt you need something with manual ground balance. The ground balance on the F2 is preset, and the F4 has manual ground balance only in all metal. The new F5 has manual with tracking in all metal and discrim, but there aren't many reports on it yet.

Eh, just get a Tesoro with a GB knob and go dig!

My F2 hits a quarter easy at 6" in my test garden. I live in N. Idaho and the ground here is fairly mineralized. The target value jumps around quite a bit on the lcd at 6" and the depth indicator shows 8" in pinpoint mode, but it still gives a good high tone which I would dig in the field as I rely more on sound and repeatability of the signal than the display. I just bought a used Vaquero and will hopefully be using this as my main machine. Used to have a Bandido II mm and it was the best little detector I ever owned. The main reason I bought the F2 was the price and I wanted to see if I really wanted to get back into detecting after about an 8 year or so layoff without spending an arm and a leg, but I didn't want a kids toy either. I'm happy with the F2 and will keep it for the time being as a backup or let my son use it. I could do some depth comparisons between the F2 and the Vaquero when I get it, although it may not be a fair test as the Vaquero is close to a top of the line detector and the F2 is an entry level machine. I could also test the F2 with the 10" magnum coil which may make it a more fair comparison as the F2 should get better depth. Tesoro coil is 9"X8" on the Vaquero I believe.
