Need an opinion, Explorer II vs E Trac

Both excellent units, both about the same depth, Explorer audio is just a TOUCH better in my opinion, E-Trac may run a touch more stable, E-Trac has a few nice options that the Explorer doesn't have, but bottom line is, two experienced users -- one of the E-Trac and one of the Explorer -- will both do equally well, in general.

Truthfully, I'd let it come down to a pocketbook decision...if you have the cash for the E-Trac, get it -- especially since it will be a newer unit and probably will have more life left in it than the Ex. II (all things being equal). This is ESPECIALLY true if you can get an E-Trac bought last year (after the point when Minelab started allowing the warranties to be transferrable).

OTHERWISE, if you find a great deal on an Explorer II, SNAG it. You can't go wrong either way, from my perspective.

As Steve said Both excellent units, both about the same depth, Explorer audio is just a TOUCH better in my opinion,
I do not think my EX-II or SE-Pro would walk over things a Etrac would see.
I have used one but, I personally do not think it offers anything related to Target ID, Depth, or Seperation the things important that warrant the extra cost.
Not to mention with the CTX3030 out now many are ditching their older machines in hopes the new machine will find them more and deeper things.
I hope it does for them but, for now I will wait on the CTX.

It is all about the sounds/tones and learning the machine.
I do not care if it is a EX, EX-S, EX-II, SE, or SE-Pro if you learn what the machine is doing and how it reacts to given situations you will have just as much success as anyone.

I would try to find either a nice used EX-II or SE-Pro IMHO. Even better if either is equipped with a X1 Probe.

Best of luck on your decsision.

Very similar detectors, except Etrac faster in discrimination. If you never used Explorer buy Etrac, its a bit simple and bigger screen.

My question is why compare the Xcal and not the Sov in this situaltion? Lets get apple to apples. I assume you are hunting on the beach wet/dry sand and no where elce? Because thats the only place an Xcal is going to shine is in the water over a Sov or ET. There are advantages on the Sov over the Xcal in the wet/dry sand over the Xcal.... even in the water to knee deep. I use the SE and its as good as the Xcal and deeper on the wet/dry sand. Ive tested EVERY thing ive dug on the beach over both machines and the SE has the edge air testing. Ive had them both on the beach..... same story. Long term with the Xcal..... its water proof and you can balance it better on a straight shaft or hip mount it. Its simple to use.... but i dont think the construction is as good as the ET either. You also are stuck with the head phones and 8 or 10 inch coil..... unlike the Sov or ET.
