Need another coil???

Hey all, the coil that came with my 705 is the 5X10. As I understand it this is a fairly narrow coil for detecting, so my question is
1) do I stay with this coil and learn how to use it well for general hunting, or
2) do I get another coil for general use? If so, what would you all recommend?

I'm generally going to be looking for coins and maybe some civil war relics.
I read one post that recommended that whatever coil you have go with it and learn everything you can about it's strengths and weaknesses before considering another coil.
Thanks for your input.

All coils have there strong points and weak points. I have the 6 inc dd , 9inch 7.5, , 9inch 18.75 and the 10.5 inch 7.5 coil. I like the 6 inch the best for coin hunting as it gets in between the trash really good. I like the sock coil to for coins if the trash ain't to bad. I use the 9 inch 18.75 and 10.5 inch coils the most for relic hunting. I have dug 3 ringers at a measured 13 inches with both coils. The ids were -8 though and the sensitvity was at 30. It is what ever you get used to that usually works the best for you.

Part of the advantage of the X-Terra, is the ability to have essencially 3+ detectors in one by mearly changing coils. Changing from one frequency to another is like opening another door. You might know the houseplan, but have yet to see what color the rooms are. Changing coil search pattern configurations within the same frequency isn't as dramatic. More like walking into the room and seeing it from the perspective of someone 6" taller (or shorter).

As for which coil will be best for you? Depends on a few more factors in addition to what you're looking for.
What is the ground like where you will be hunting?
Is there a variety of soil conditions in the various areas that you will hunt?
Is maximum depth necessary? (some hunt strictly for old coins, and some just hunt for cash)

In all honesty, if I had to do it all over again, I'd buy a Gold Pack. Then I'd get a 9" 3kHz, and skip the 7.5kHz. I've never had a situation where I've picked the 7.5kHz because of soil conditions, only because it is the lowest frequency DD that I have. For my purposes, having the two opposite ends of the X-Terra's capable range is all that I need.

Since you already have the DD 5x10, I would get the 3khz. Great on silver! Then if you have enough in the future get the 6" DD.

Great post! I totally agree!!!

What I would recommend is to stick with your gold pkg. coil until you feel it has nothing more to offer you at the sites you are hunting, only then move on to another coil. It has worked well for me as each new coil for the XT-70 (705) would find coins that the other coils were missing. Because of my being into coins and an occasional relics like you apparently are, would recommend the 10.5 DD MF coil for that type of hunting as it has a little extra depth and its extra ground coverage is helpful too. Of course if you are really just into hunting for silver, then the 9" 3 khz. concentric coil would probably be best for that, just like the 6" DD HF coil is excellent on coins in high trash areas and on small gold.

This is a very good suggestion. I look for the same items (coins and relics) The only thing I could suggest is getting a larger coil that runs on a different frequency when you decide to get another coil. Your 5X10 HF DD coil should be good enough in trashy areas to look for coins. Another frequency larger coil would get you more depth. Depending on what kind of ground you have where you search would determine either a concentric or DD style coil.
