Need help I.D.ing old coin :cool:

I found this coin back in November and I have been unable to identify it. It was found in the waters off of the old sailing port of Somerset, Bermuda so it could be from any nation's currency from the 1600's to the present. This coin is unmilled on the edge and from the condition I found it in I would think fairly old (Victorian period or thereabouts) but I could be wrong. Any suggestions as to this coin would be greatly appreciated.

Its got stars on the back and a liberty on the front. I'd say you have a very old US coin, nice find!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the response Jamie. I thought that it might be a bust of liberty or maybe of Queen Victoria, it's hard to say. When did the US of A have 9 colonies as represented by the 9 stars? Sorry but my americain history isn't always the best.

All these coins were found in Somerset Harbour, Bermuda.

It's a bit of a brain teaser this one, isn't it.

I was goofing off last night looking for a match of that coin , I haven't seen anything close to that , The head looks similar to some EARLY American coinage , but the back it very unique and the larger 2 P on the front makes for another mystery, I assume it is silver ?? what is the reference for size ?? is it bigger than a quarter ?? I think it is maybe not a coin, but a token or keepsake of some sort ....It has a real early American feel, but it is not any U.S. legal tender that Aim aware of....It may in fact be an early coin from another country , but it looks awfully American to me ....definately a great find and a good mystery ......I will keep poking around a bit to see if I see a similar item ..... thanks for the peek I like it ...........Adam

The coin is 3/16" larger in diameter than an americain quarter, so the same size as a canadian twoonie. I think it is silver but not 100%, more like 50% silver plus other metals but that is just my best guess. I was originally thinking it might be a british two pence coin but that turned out to be a dead end, at least as far as my research took me. It could very well be a foreign coin but I think there is a definite americain or british influence to the design, good call mate!
I've driven myself to distraction trying to figure this one out so I hope somebody can come up with an answer.

I scanned through thousands of coins, tokens and medals and still cant find another example of the one you found. I feel it must be of European organ, due to the 2P it would perhaps indicate two pence,which is marked on several coins from throughout Europe specifically Britain and Ireland, it may in fact be Irish, but the head and motif look distinctly British or early American , The stars tell me it American but the rest reeks of Europe I still Ain't sure .I like it a bunch ....here is a link to the last place I was looking.. if you scroll to the bottom there is an index of tokens its pretty cool ...good find and take care http://www.coins.nd.edu/
