Hey Terry...
Below is a pic of a railroad baggage tag that is currently on ebay. It is from the Kansas City, St. Josephs & Council Bluffs Railroad.
I'm trying to make out the inscription on the pic...
...it kinda looks like "IRSC 45 KAS" possibly "RSC 4 S. KAS"
What's your take on the inscription? Is there an "I" and an "R" corroded there or is it my imagination?

the best i can see is ARSC45.KAN and at the top on left side of eyelet i can see BLK and other side is what looks like &MITH........thanks

...I can't dig up anything definite on this.
Best guesses (if this is a baggage tag)...
S.KAS: Southern Kansas Railroad
ARSC: Arkansas, South Carolina
ARSC: Arkansas River, Sterling City (on the Southern Kansas Line)
From the look of the numbers 194, I think it is safe to say it goes well back into the 1800's.
What a sweet find, Terry. Have you tried submitting a pic to a few of the numerous historical railway associations out there?
Sorry, bud, but we do have some lovely parting gifts... Check out the link below for 623 searchable railway maps 1820-1900 Thanks for posting, Terry and hopefully someone can come up with more on this great find. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Below is an excellent page on tags including steamship and postal tags, etc...
You might try contacting the owner and see what he can come up with for you. Let us know.
That's a really nice dig, thanks for posting!
