need help with iron mask

hi all, i recently received a xs. i have stupid a question.i know the iron mask has a value of -16 to 0. wouldnt that be the same as in the select menu to discrim. agaist nails? i have a manual & am trying to understand it.but it just seems that one defeets the other.or is the iron mask just how much iron is discriminated. thanks.

I don't think so. Nails likely are more specific than iron mask. Mask of -14 for instance lets everything thru above -14 thru. Mask as the display shows is a line drawn thru the discrim pattern. Right is in left is out.

Lots of kinds of nails, iron steel aluminum copper and all sort of other stuff. Steel and iron nails likely have some piece of the discrim pattern all its own and this is cancelled out.

Using iron mask lets more iffy stuff thru so deep coins show up more often but so does a LOT of trash!!!

It always seems to be a trade off. More discrim means less junk but more deep coins missed.

Iron Mask from 0 to -16 is more like discrimination of ferrous metals if compared to other detectors. Nails hit in the -15 zone. An Iron Mask setting of -16 is all metal detecting. In reality the iron mask is discrimination in steps of the MOST ferrous metals. Many alloys that have ferrous content will hit to the right of the screen.

If nails are giving you a problem they can be identified in part by sweeping the coil from different directions. The symmetry of coins will give a repeatable sound, most of the time, from any direction the coil is moved over the targets. Nails are not consistent even if they cause a high tone to be sounded. The Explorer11 adds ferrous sounds which will allow the user to pretty much eliminate nails by sound using ferrous tones.

Hope this helps,

Another possibly irrevelant point, but one that I was unsure of, and others also were unsure about when I asked.....I got the answer direct from Minelab in Ireland, after they spoke to the software people else where...I think Oz.

The question I asked was:

If you create a screen in Disc/Smart mode that looks the same as an Iron Mask screen, are the results the same.

People on other forums gave me widely differing answers, but the answer from Minelab was that it would not make any difference if you create your own Iron Mask lookalike screen, or you use the Iron Mask function, the results, sounds will be the same.

The reply quoted below.

Hello Neil,

Sorry for the delay but I have in Des Dunne
